Air cooled VWs hate any air leaks.. in exhaust or inlet side --
so, looks like You have an air leak ---
check all exhaust joins etc.. where its bolted on..
and see if You can tighten them..
You may need new exhaust gaskets
exhaust cement isn't recommended, once it dries it usually falls off.. You can use silastic silicon on the exhaust joints..
just make sure the metal is shiney clean... use a wire brush..
cheers

no they didn't
Most race cars do if you haven't noticed. its just unburned fuel
buring in the exhaust.

I am guessing it will be those shitty clamps on your heater boxes / J tubes
The tubes wear and is hard to get the clamps to clamp.
On top of that the clamps are just rubbish.
Best way to fix it is the weld flanges on.
That is what I did.

I had flames blowing out of my exhaust on idle and low end revs, and it turned out to be carbie issues.
People said to me it was air leaks in the exhaust or intake manifold, it turned out to be crap in my idle jets (twin webers)
Its a process of elimination, sometimes a long slow process. Good Luck

I had a convertable with a old rusty exhaust and on down shifts and slowing down (overrev) she would bang backfire like uncle buck. Everyone in town
used to comment on it. I couldnt bring myself to fix it. I sold it like that!
