std tachos

there has been talk on the forum recently that standard tachos are rare items on t2.5 busses, i was just wondering if this is the case for all models of volkswagen. my bay panel has a standard VDO tacho. is that rare?

very plain, black, fitted to blank hole on RHS of speedo, has VDO script from memory. i can only presume it is original. has adjustable red arm to mark upper rpm limit.

I hate to dissapoint but it sounds like an aftermarket fit. (Not that there is anything wrong with that!)

Speaking of tacho's with red needle adjustable for max rpm.

Where would you place that needle?

Ours is set at 3500 rpm!

Baywindow kombi's never came out with a Tacho, the right hand pod was blanked off on all models except the deluxe microbus which had a clock there.

at the moment the needle is on 4500, the engine doesnt mind going there, but the exhaust (with huge hole in muffler) buzzes like anything.

In my VW factory manual for the 2 litre, it say's that the engine reaches it's maximum HP output at 4200 RPM so thats what I have set my redline at, no use going any higher if its not making anymore power.

Hi Andy
Maximum torque, is reached at 2800 RPM so if you change reasonably quick at 4200, it will be OK, It goes back to the max torque range, your engine is still making optimum HP.

Why???
Just remove your rear vision mirrors, turn up the tunes and enjoy the drive :D
Might take twice as long in a Kombi, but never hoped out of another vehicle after a 10hr drive feeling refreshed before

I'm running a late type 3 tacho in my kombi. It fits very nicely and is very simple to instal. Unfortunately it has a black face and my stock gauges are grey, but I have a black set in my shed. The only other problem I have with it, is that the numbers are printed on the 'glass', not on the face. Sorry about the photo, it's the only one I could find.
