Will gearbox hold
Hi guys,
I am getting mixed information about wether or not the stock kombi box will hold upto a subaru convetrsion.
Some say you will break it others say if you drive sensibly without doing burnouts or trying to wheelstand it will be fine.
I was hoping to put a EJ20T in but if i will def break the box will a EJ25 N/A be a better option.
I guess further down the track ill save up for a beefed box or the reveresed subaru box but im hoping the stabdard kombi box will hold for the mean
time with sensible driving.
Also anyone know the legallity of the above conversions in QLD?

I'm no expert, but people run EJ20T behind Beetle gearboxes. And are you talking 3, 5 or 6 rib Kombi gearbox.
As you mentioned with sensible driving, shouldn't be a problem.

I think it will handle it fine.
I run a standard Single side plate box with a kombi 3rd & 4th gear with the course teeth as I have stripped a couple of standard fine teeth 3rd
gears that come standard in the beetle box. The current box in my car has done 68'000klms. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnEJiY3yEWk Although we will see how it goes at the drags tommorrow
Every gearbox can & will break, Just depends how smooth u can drive it.

True enough.
My 5rib spat it's main bearing and I didn't thrash it (EJ25na), but like you say, your Lbug has taken a beating. I think you just have to treat them
with respect and remember it's 40years old.
I'd suggest, if you're gonna go turbo you spend the money on a modded up box or subaru box up front. Better than having to fix it down the track...
coz you will if you use the car properly.
G50 is total overkill unless you are doing some serious drag racing with very big turboes.

I did 11 passes down the 1/4 mile on Saturday, best of 13.3 @ 103mph, not quite the 12second pass I wanted, but still drove it home & took the
kids to school this morning.

Nice one bud. Thx for the advice. I think I'm going to chuck in the ej20t with stock box and run no boost for a while while i save up for one of
those subie reveresed boxes
