what about just putting in an 8 volt battery. starting is no problem, radio and stereo work ok, wipers go ok, and lights are brighter using 6 volt

What about charging an 8v battery? You would need to change the regulator, I presume.

8 volt batteries used to be made by a fellow in Newcastle NSW in the 60's & 70's. I have never seen on e since.....
It would be better in the long run to change everything over to 12 volts.
You would need :
12v coil
12v Generator & Regulator
12v Battery
12v headlamp bulbs - Halogen x 2
12v Tail/stop lamps x 2 21/5 watt
12v dash lamps x 6 or 7 1.2 watt
12v blinker bulbs x 4 21watt
12v blinker unit
12v number plate bulb
12v interior lamp festoon bulb
wipers OK if used with resistors
starter motor & solenoid OK
Horn OK
Distributor - Condenser & Points OK
Fuses are OK
I hope this helps.

This manual has good instructions for 6 volt to 12 volt conversion
Haynes Restoration Manual - VW Beetle and Transporter
Shop around for it. I got mine from Amazon but US site. They don't seem to have it now?
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1859606156/ref=ase_classiccars0c-21/026-8720907-8784422#product-details
You can never have enough books and manuals, well at least I can't. It helps me understand my cars at least:thumb

Jen this is great.
once upon a time Tech was an area you were not quite so in touch with.
Now you are right in here. It just proves that with a bit of time and reading anything is the go.
Good on ya. :thumb

Have been into it for some time. Well since last year.
Just had a couple of distractions this year which have kept me away from here, and then there is those padding threads which I seem addicted to
Still read my manuals and think about it all. No light at night when you get home this time of year doesn't help, or weather like we're
having in Melbourne today:jesus
This conversion thing is something I have to think about.
Well, Grey 57 picked up a 6 volt gennie and regulator for me yesterday so looks like my descision to convert is on hold
It's a matter of how long Bel and I can last out on 6 volts
My biggest fear is putting Bel on Club rego because I'm not driving her, and then not driving her as much as she like to be driven. I'd go
12 volt before that happened for sure. I'm not into saving her for special occasions really, she's special all the time:kiss
