I use and recommend ACE Air Cooled Engine oil. Australian made and has all the properties required for long life.

yep, now fully synthetic good oil.
Next engines will be upgraded to Joe Gibbs oil for me though, even better by a long shot.
A pointer for you folks is stick to one oil brand and type, otherwise changing brands can do its damage by additive chemistry clashes.
And don't use caster oil, its no good for the engine

Any decent name-brand 20W50, as long as it's clean! I like to buy Nulon or Penrite because they're Aussie-made and owned, but the most important
thing is to change it regularly! Buying cheap oil and change it every 5,000km will be far better for your bug than putting fancy oil in every
10,000km.

20/50w is fine in one getting a bit long in the tooth but that's like tar in a fresh motor.
Anyone leaving oil in an air cooled engine for 10,000kms needs their VW taken away from them.
Even fancy oil is cheaper than rebuilds.

It says in the original owners manual for our 1302.
Regular oil changes are required even if the best brand of oil is used.
Change every 5000km
Oil consuption is 0.5-1.0 liter per 1000km

Synthetic not really good for air cooled engines.
Poor heat transfer qualities.
I read it on samba, so it must be correct.
Sometimes Volkswagen dealers sell spare parts. Amazing isn't it!

YES MOST important...
always use the same brand of oil...
no swapping about...
NOT GOOD....
and synthetic oil isn't recommended for air cooled engines.
and You still NEED to change the oil at every 5000klm maximum...
as recommended by VW Mexico in 2003..

YES I agree Joel
synthetic oil isn't recommended for air cooled engines...
they will leak from places they didn't leak before...
best to stay away from them...
