Stock bug and new engine regs?
Following on from the regs. for installing another engine in modified vehicles - I was wondering if I decide to replace my 1300 engine with a spare
stock 1500 engine in to my non modified bug if that also had to be subject to an engineering report or at least a notification to the RTA /RMS ?

Hi
When they fitted 1500 motors to Beetles they came with front disc brakes, so to be absolutely legal you will need to upgrade the brakes to that of the
donor car.

Steve ,yeah I have discs on it already-just wondering if I will have to have an engineer check it or do I just fill in some paperwork at the RMS?

gets messy I am guessing
Your 1962 should have a 1200 - not a 1300
But that comes under the 15% rule
If it was engineered for the disc brakes and the 1300 then a 1500 is 15% on the 1300 - so no.
But it is more than 15% comapred to the 1200 - so yes

Bizarre my 62 is stock except for the disc brakes and 1300 motor. I believe a 1300 motor is 1285 CC.
A 1500 motor is 1492 CC.
15% of 1285 equals 192.75 = 1477 CC. That's 16 CC over the 15% limit. Could my calculations be correct, and or would it matter?

I don't understand how the RMS figures the engine size. Is it done with rated HP or CC ?
According to Rob and Daves site, bugs from
August 1965 through July 1966 are
1300cc with a 50 HP.
August 1966 through July 1967 they are
1500cc and have 53 HP.
August 1969 through July 1970
1600cc and are 57 HP.
If one uses the CC size a 1500 is over the limit,if you use the HP it's within the allowable 15% increase. The 1600 is one HP over.
Thanks barls for moving t thread here.

its HP increase and its 20% well at least in VIC it is, cc increase is by weight of the car and according to that its somewhere around the 3.5L for a
bug.

Damn! The Victorians sure have a more reasonable approach. The 15% in NSW is minuscule.

Hi
The 15% rule only applies so that you don't need a engineers report when motor reconditioning increases the motor size.
In NSW the engineering limit for normally aspirated is 3x factory weight, so if your bug was say 740 kg you could fit a 2220 cc motor.
In NSW if a car does require an engineering report for an upgraded motor, a P plater is not allowed to drive that car.
What sort of disc brakes are they, they could need engineering as well.

Hi
The front brake rotor on all Beetles is basically the same, some had wheel centre location spigots, callipers did vary but not by much in pad area, so
a 69 disc would be suitable for much larger motors.
Did you need adaptors to mount the bake calliper?
