Are Auto's any good?

Hi Guys

Looking at an auto '73 pop top bus for a mate.
What is the go with the auto boxes? Are the any good or do you just replace them with a manual set up.
He is only going to do short trips in da bus.
Any advice will be apreciated.
Cheers
Dave

I have heard good things about them, both driving, and mechanically.
I have also heard of parts which are unobtainable.
To change an auto box to a manual you have the challenge that there is no clutch cable tube in the tunnel.
