A year ago my friend bought a tatty but rego'd Split for $8k .. seems prices have skyrocketed since then, i am hoping $11k gets me a bus with all
welding done and no engine, or a running one with rust issues. by sept i will have $18k that i would like to get a running tatty roadworthy split
???
I can see me ending up with a lefty import

Your budget will by you heartache in a splitty (i.e. too much work left to do)
Get a lowlight bay and you will end up with something enjoyable and fairly complete. My 2c

You might want to reassess your budget, as Marcus said it will only buy you heartache and whole lot more in the costs you will be forking out to get
things fixed. One thing you want to watch, like the green split above, is what's lurking behind the paint under the lower 6 inches. Sometimes the
more you dig, the more it hurts the wallet. Don't rush into anything. If you can save 25k, you will be able to get something you are happy with and
will cost you less. Spend less to start with and the more it will cost you to get it roadworthy and to a safe standard that you would also be happy
with. There is a difference between ratty and unroadworthy.

Thanks for your input everyone,
I have owned two lowlights in the past and as much as i love Bay windows i really want to get a Splitscreen. I sold all my classic Scooters to raise
the money so that's all i have to work with, i have a young family and just cannot justify 25k sadly.
I am not after a show winner so i should be able to cover the welding, engine and a big paintbrush and pot of matt black paint

Maybe 10 years ago you could have bought a split for $11k that had all the welding done but not today.
They will all require the bottom 12 inches replaced, that costs money in parts and labour.
Also a ratty running split for $18k wont have had the welding done, might look like it has if its had a quick skim with filler and a quick
paintjob?
Good luck on your search but be wary of cheap splits

If your not in a rush you'll find one , just be picky and ask alot of q's , go on dsk and look around plenty of busses that are fairly solid for
good $$ but expect to spent up to 30k if u cant do much of your own work to get a ratty bus regoed . Just save more and get what u want already
done but make sure you inspect it in person or get alot of pics but even then you cant be garanteed of a solid bus

Don't forget the sheet metal you will need to purchase which never fits correctly, and also work you may need to do to brakes, steering and wiring.
Sadly $25 is an ideal price these days. You may find something for 18k leaving you without money to make it road worthy and safe to carry your family,
but you will need at least another 10k plus to make it decent. The reason Splitties fetch the prices they do now is due to the cost spent on them to
get them drivable. Not wanting to burst a bubble, but it is how it is. Splits and Bays are chalk and cheese.

All good advice from everyone, and it's true they are all rusty in my price bracket ! The brakes / lowering etc etc are going to be a whole new
learning curve for me as well i am sure......
Good news is i am in negotiations with a Dsk'er for an early Microbus, needs some welding but not as bad as some i have seen, i am just awaiting more
photo's just to be sure before i go see / get it. The price is right and will enable me to get all the welding done at least, luckily i can do the
spannerwork myself.....
Wish me luck !

Best of luck, but a heads up. It's missing a lot of parts, ones which are hard to find and will cost you when you do find them, hence the sale price.
If it was complete it wouldn't be that price. If its something looong term you are wanting to sink money into and hunt parts, perfect!

Thanks for the words of warning Miss VDub, and True be carefull on what you look at but please dont bag my bus if you dont know it...My bus has had a
lot of rust work done, sills, arches floors and coat of POR15 etc etc, very well by reputable previous owners. i put a skim of bog over the top to re
shape panels and got a mate to patch up the green. I can send a journal of photos if you are keen later dibsy. I reckon keep your eye out, go over
the car with a fine toothed comb, or get someone to help you. Yeh, dont rush in... But dont be too paranoid to have a crack.
here is a photo, tidy, road worthy, on historic rego, and cruising for less than $18k (owes me) so it is not impossible

Think if you re read you will find there was no "bagging" as you call it of your bus. I've never seen it on the road or at any shows?

Sorry choose not to go to Run to the Sun and was moving house on the 5th so missed out on all the fun.
If you want to attend Valla, get in quick as there are very few camp sites left. You want to make sure you stay where all the action happens at Valla
Beach Tourist Park! Staying all the way in Nambucca Heads isnt the same.
