If it has been failed, fix the leak and take it back to the inspection station, don't put another mechanic on the spot with a dodgy inspection as the
vehicle has a high chance of being targeted by the RTA RMA or whoever and he will then be fined or lose his licence for doing you a favour.

I agree
You need to take Your car to a friendly VW knowledgeable
mechanic... [next time]
young mechanics now are taught all the bad things of an oil leak
YIKES
I always spray foaming degreaser all under My engine if I have a leak...
wait a minute and hose it off..
if its still oily do it again..
if its all greasy from an old leak..
scrape all the old stuff off with a screwdriver or paint scraper
then spray again with foaming degreaser
once its all off.. Go back to the mechanic...
[all available from Go lo etc]
back in 50's 60s 70's just about all cars leaked oil ..
it was natural.. lol
Best of Luck
LEE
PS: it IS normal to take it back to the original mechanic/inspector.. LEE

Clean the engine with degreaser. Then change oil new with some fresh Penrite HPR30 or HPR GAS, or your preferred oil.

thats how your post post read mate.
if not the case just clean it then take it back to the same guy, his thourgh by the sounds of it so prob the safest option and then next time take it
to an air cooled friendly mech to keep the mind at ease
