Worth doing or not?
I have a recently rebuilt, basically stock but 1641cc, with this exhaust https://www.classicveedub.com.au/cvd_new/part_detail.aspx?parts_id=16612. I'm considering fitting Twin Weber 40 IDF carbs
and would welcome some feedback.
Basically, is it worth it? Will they provide increased performance, but maintain reliability and comfort/ease of driving, or will they just look
pretty and be a waste of money that increasingly gives me the shits?
Thanks in advance.

All of the above.

yes it is worth it
You will need a decent linkage set up though
"My" opinion is to buy some carbs off
http://stores.ebay.com.au/ALFA1750S-CARBURETORS-PARTS-STORE
I would go for Dells over Webers
Then get some manifolds, filters and a CSP linkage
You need to be prepared to jet and sync them up.
Gets expensive if you give it to someone

So, it'll end up something like.....
"Check this out." .. open engine lid
"Wow, they look awesome!!!"
"Yeah, I had a bit of trouble fitting them, but I'm happy with how they look now."
"It must fly"
"Yeah, it goes okay. Bit rough around town but great on the open road. I still need to tweak the tuning." ...... and will be forever doing so
"How's the fuel economy?"
"No real change" ..... bullshit
But I think I'll do it anyway!!!!

You can always go a set of Kadron. They are by no means better than webbers but if your not running large horse power and are after a good all rounder
and a bit of money left in the pocket they would do. I'm running them on my bug and so far so good just invest in a good linkage, something like a
Gene Berg kit.

Do it, learn how to tune it and throw away that exhaust....
OR...get the heads done and run that, then put on carbs and exhaust when you can afford them and enjoy.

Those carbs will give a boost but are abit wasted with a stock cam,
If you don't feel like opening it back up for a cam change single throat twins will give more bang for buck.

36MM idf's would be a better choice and forget the kadrons, a single barrel a cylinder wins every time if it is sizes correctly.

Maybe forget the Kads if your not to worried about the dollars. I wouldn't right them off fully as not a bad budget/all rounder for that size donk

Put some kads on a few stock but in good cond 1600s and was a difference , bit more punchier down low and smoother , top end was okay but needed
bigger heads /cam , and fuel use was no real difference , have also fitted 40hpmx 's to a 1600 but think it has a small cam 100 or 110 and thats a
blast to drive for what it is , what about fitting some ratio rockers ?

The kads are right behind the eight ball compaired to the webers, totally different manufacturing quality, by the time you get them running sort or
right you could have purchased the webers from the US.

Hp is in the heads, even small cams want headwork first for more power.

Fitting the carbs will add a bit of bling, maybe even a bit more power?
You will take ages getting them tuned correctly, once you have done that you shouldnt need to touch them.
I would look at Dells myself and if i was going to the trouble of fitting them and tuning them i would get a decent set of heads, as Matt said its
all in the heads, even if you dont want to split the case to fit a cam, get some port work done.
But opinions are like areseholes, everyone has one!!
