CLOP and revs...

Sometimes when I'm accelerating after just changing to a faster gear, I get a "CLOP" sound from the engine (piston?) and then as I continue to accelerate all is fine.

Why is this? Is seems to be getting progressively worse and I want to attack it before it attcks...who knows what?

Any help appreciated, thanks.

PS: It's a 1600 bug.

if it is a single noise just as you let the clutch out & accelarate, then it is probably fore/aft movement somewhere in the transaxle or mounts:rudolf

Check all your CV joints are all tight, they do come loose, I had a mechanic that didn;t do mine up once and it was making a similar noise, I got it before it destroyed the gear box flange! needless to say it was the last time that moron touched my Kombi.

sounds like an engine mount - may be?

What happens, say if you are in second and you floor it and then back off suddenly?? Do you get your sound then??

How twitchy is it when you go around a corner?? Does it feel loose in the end.

You might be able to get under, may be put the arse up on a ramp and try and push and shove and see it there is any movement in the gear box at the mounts

another thing you could try is put into 1st gear with the motor off & rock the car back & forward, if you hear the noise get a fearless volunteer assistant to help you see where it is coming from, another simple thing is jack one side up at a time, & with handbrake off (chock the other wheels put it in gear & rock the wheel back & forward, there sould be a little bit of movement & a slight noise, & when you do it tto the other side that should be the same
Sorry but pathetically slow trial & error is the only real way for us to solve your problem, maybe someone with a beetle can email you pics of just which nuts & bolts to check :(
