WTB: T1 cooling flaps/thermostat/all bits
Hi,
I'm wanting to adopt the factory cooling flaps/thermostat etc. for an engine I'm currently building (and see if those German engineers knew what
they were doing with warm up times etc). Does anyone have a complete setup (flaps/rods/original style thermostat etc) which they are willing to sell?
I am in Brisbane but willing to pay postage. Please PM for post what you have.
Thanks
Peter

Yes, the VW engineers did know what they were doing, but the service people in many countries were told by management to take the thermostat out and
throw it away...
Many VW owners took the cooling flaps out and binned them too.. maybe some mechanics???
so, not many sitting about in sheds now...
My engine oil temperature doesn't get hot at all driving around town or even between towns with an outside air temperature of 10-16C
I remember reading many years ago an article by V8 supercar engine builder and driver Larry Perkins, He also used to rally Beetles
He said VW spent millions on getting the cooling system perfected... so KEEP ALL THE COOLING FLAPS THERMOSTATS ETC ON THE ENGINE..
they Need to be there to make it all work...
You can buy New VW Mexican thermostat kits....
thermostat, rod and bracket --
but they are a new design, where the thermostat keeps the flaps closed when it stops working...
The original kept them open...

From the US, but all in working order!
I was stoked when I found these guys and will be ordering some for my engine after I recover from Valla!
Cheers

Yeah I've always felt that on a relative economy car like the Beetle that everything on it must have served a useful purpose to survive the bean
counters.
That website looks promising. Might have to be my source in the end, but please still come forward if you've a pile of them. Sad if they really were
all just binned, not just shelved!

Hi Peter,
How did you get on finding a cooling flap set up? I was looking into this yesterday after coming across Awesome Powdercoating on Utube. I have been
Email contact with Clark, they can supply the flap assembly for US$119, but postage would be US$75. I am in Brisbane as well, if you are interested
perhaps we could order two sets and combine postage?
But like you I would prefer to find a set here, either new or used.

Rob,
I got a few bits and pieces through TheSamba (nothing came up in AU). Interestingly I was going to order the remaining bits through Awesome
Powdercoating as well. Would be happy to split postage. Have to do a bit of a cooling system inventory to see what I need tho (was trying to build a
couple of systems).
