I love the olympics, just not the australian media coverage of the event.
As a multicultural nation how come I have to sit through a whole Australian womens hockey game when there are 25 other events going on. I wish they wouldn't be so biased towards just showing the events Australia are in and show a little of everything even if australia isn't in it! Think I have seen the womens swimming gold medal 5 time already.

I am watching some of the events, and I am really enjoying watching people, who have put truly everything in their efforts to try,,,, finally achieve success.
I feel that deserves to be witnessed and supported...

I suppose its like a vw enthusiast putting every moment and every cent and all their energy into building his dream car and then winning best of show..

its a good thing! but I appreciate not everyone is as generous with their support..

They should run two olympics side by side were the first one allows no modifications, IE, Steroids and other form of enchancements are banned, a bit like production car racing, the other Oympics can have any modifications you like, doped to the max, high compression, big cam, this would be the one i watch as you would not know what will happen, i think my favorite would be the weight lifting were there would be lots of blow out were there guts drop out there arse. it could be a bit like a engine blow contest.

In 2000 I drove my buggy from Perth up the Great Central Road to Alice Springs to avoid the Sydney Olympics. While I was out there most of the groups of people that I met had the same attitude. Discussion of the olympics was banned.

Historically speaking the original Olympics in ancient Greece were destroyed by commercialism

When the ancient Olympic Games were on enemies would stop fighting, allow passage of enemies through their land to and from the Olympics and then they would re-start the war when it was all over.

Eventually money took control of simple fame, all that peace to each other when the games were on stuff ended, and the Olympics finished when the Romans took over Greece and stopped them. Why? I can't remember.

I predict that the present high level of commercialisation of the Olympics will cause their end as people just turn off them.

I will not watch, listen to or discuss the games.

As a matter of fact this attitude is a simple extension of my complete disinterest in commercial sport in any of its forms.

To play sport is excellent. I have no problem with the actual playing of sport, but to watch it or discuss it is utterly tedious.

I agree that the athletes have put in a lot of work to get to where they are, but are they really there for Australia or just for themselves. I think the later.

And whether I or 10,000 others watch the TV, will it make any difference to the race/event outcome :no::no:

As you said, not everyone is generous with their support it's just that I have more import things to me that I want to do with my time.

For those that want to watch it, enjoy. I think we should just do what makes us happy and not worry about everyone else all the time.

Kev

Olympics ... a journey for dedicated young men and women to show their skills and talent ....not so dissimilar to VW Dubbers who grind, weld, blast, sand their cars to show their skills and talent ...... no need to trash them out - we do what we do and they do what they can .................. change the channel or get off the couch ...easy!

They don't bag us so why should we bag them?

For anyone that has busted their freckle to compete at a reasonable level of sport, I think they can have an appreciation of the effort involved.
I have only competed at a paltry A grade level in MTB Cross Country and know the effort that took.
I don't like half the knobs in commentary but I do take stock of the people putting it on the line to win at the highest level.

I find joy in other people's happiness and success :tu:
