Mayo under the 710 cap?
There is what looks like mayonnaise under the 710 cap in my kombi. If it was under the radiator cap in a water-cooled motor I would assume it was oil
in the water from a blown head gasket, but as we all know stock kombi motors aren't water-cooled - so where did the mayo under my 710 cap come
from???
(Sorry, I got the name of the cap wrong, I was holding it the wrong way up )

The mayo is from cold weather.
This is what happens when you dont get the motor hot enough to "boil off" the impurities. Short trips and winter time it is ok.
If you are getting it in the middle of summer - something is wrong
Drive HARDER buddy - the only way to get rid of it!!

Thanks that explains it. Some bastard PO removed the thermostat and flaps (the kombi used to live in Queensland, but that's no excuse), and
driving to and from work in Canberra in winter the motor never gets a chance to reach operating temp. I know it's causing wear, but I
haven't got time or money to install thermostat and flaps.

Yep, same prob. But instead of having oil in your water, you have water in your oil.
The water comes from condensation in colder weather, and sometimes from driving through deep water (type 1 engines will suck water through the thrower
style crank shaft pulley seal, buggy / baja owners by warned).
