Yeah, what car is it for? Engine hoists are useless for aircooled cars, as the engine has to drop out through the bottom on a jack. If it's a Golf or
similar, it is possible to remove the engine, transmission and front subframe all in one piece. You lower the front subframe onto the ground and then
jack the body up and over the lot. This approach is obviously much easier on a car hoist, but it can be done with jacks and a few people. The engine
hoist is probably the easier way though.

Tried lifting a type4 up on to the bench on your own without one?
They're not totally useless for aircooled motors.

yup, like loading a complete unit onto a ute/trailer, or loading an engine onto a packet rack, or like you said onto a bench or engine stand.
plus useful if you have other cars other than AC vw. Good investment imho, going to get one myself once I got the shelving complete and I make some
work benches first.

I get by with a little help from my friends!
Just call a mate around to help lift it onto the bench. I can't say I like doing much major work on my own anyway. I much prefer to have mates around
to help, then I go and help work on their cars.
