How to be polite.....

I received a call from my wife today about a man who came to the door and asked if the cars in our backyard were for sale. That is o.k. but when my wife said to him 'not interested' his reply was " I'll just go down and have a look" which she thought was a bit rude and when she said no he said he would just go and take some pictures and basically wouldn't back down. My wife understandably was concerned by his attitude and called me (I'm working out of town at the moment). I, like most people are curious about possible abandoned or unwanted cars to buy, that will one day be put back on the road, but if there was a firm NO! I would walk away (maybe try again in a couple of years). Does anyone else think that he was invading our privacy a bit much? I have nothing to hide in my back yard but why would I let some random roam around taking photos without knowing his story? Do you think my wife over reacted?

The guy has no right to waltz into your back yard and take photos on your property without your permission. Its illegal, trespassing for a start. If they are that stubborn, for all security reasons threaten to call the police. Usually enough to motivate them to go away. If he is interested and knows you dont' want to sell but still keen to check it out KNOWING he can't purchase it off you, then possibly with his stubbornness there could be a risk and possibly the chance he'd go for a 5 finger discount.

Start out polite and pull out the stern if need be.

Mate i would of got your wife to call the police ecspeically if your not home! your wife has every right to refuse entry to your yard and once she has told this person No and they still reject her decision then there is no other choice but to ring the boys in blue.

My wife didn't let him go in our back yard but he was very persistent thats all. When he realised that she wasn't going to let him down the back, he just changed the subject and talked about the floods but by this stage my wife was pretty pissed off. Time to build a front fence I think, with a sign saying 'VWs not for sale'.

Steve we are talking about Grantham here lol. I live here because I can collect cars ( we are on half an acre) and light bonfires and start a grinder on a sunday morning........

If he was from the council he has to show you ID and explain his purpose to enter your property ( i work for the local water utility), and if you say no then he cannot enter! Did your wife get he's rego or anything like that?

Yeah its a bit sus, he should have left some contact details if he was a big vw fan and wanted me to show him the cars when I get back. If it was someone from aussieveedubbers they have certainly seen the wrong side of my wife (even I avoid the 'dark side') and should contact me here first. Trust me, my cars are all projects in various stages of restoration and are nothing special but I still think an invite is in order.

A sign "beware dog on premises" is pretty effective in my experience!

i have had the same thing happen. i have 2 datsun 1600s as well as the beetle and have even caught them at the cars without even coming to the door first. Those ones get some very colourful language and a threat to call the police.
