Crank angle sensor. Did it in my Ej25 buggy for a while. Then one day it wouldn't start at all. ECU gave me the code and I replaced it. All the codes are on the forum here in the resources sticky.

those symptoms are also characteristic of leaking injectors. I would look at them also.

I have started cleaning up the wiring loomand wrapping the black corrigated hoes around the loom.
I had to replace some black hoses as well.
I have 1 loose end and don't know where it goes.

have a look, it is the connector down near the flywheel.
it is a water hose and either end goes to the cylinder head

They aren;t coolant hoses, they are oil breathers, for the rocker covers and the case breather, that T needs to feed into your intake between the air flow meter and the throttle body.

You cam just use the stock subaru brake booster fitting if it's the right size for the Kombi hose.
It is the one circled on the right

pull the injectors with rails and all, and all lines and wiring still connected. prime the pump to build pressure or if you can run the pump continuously. see if they are weeping or leaking fuel from the pintels (ends of the injectors).

what happens is when the car is left warm they leak fuel into the ports, which vaporizes and floods the engine and manifold with rich fuel vapor. when left long enough to cool, like few hours or overnight the fuel vapor condenses back to liquid and settles which in turn the engine starts easy or relatively easy.

had this experience few times before so i know it when I see it first hand. Sounds like what you are getting and its a good possibility with today's fuel.

angle of the engine?

I have just got the engine mount made.I did a trial fit in the engine bay and realised I can gain another 2 to 3 inches in ground clearance by raising the engine mount. As expected this puts the engine on a slant.

Do my question is - is this an absolute no no, engine must be 100% horizontal? Our can I have it on an angle?

1. I can gain 2 or so more inches in clearance if i push the engine mount up higher, however ths puts the engine on a slant forward. Is this an absolute NO NO? i have it currently mounted flat.

2. I have to get my head aroud the fuel system. How do I provide a fuel return to the petrol tank?

many of the off road boys run there scooby motors at an angle without and problems

you can also shorten the sump 2'' pretty easily aswell as the headers, I think it was custom offroad that did like a 90mm shorter sump?

easiest way to do the tank would be to get a later injected model tank or use a fuel tank bulkhead fitting into the top.

here are a few photos of my sump and headers

Nils thanks for posting the pics. I like that shortened sump, but as I have used the original liberty crossmember I wonder if it would fit?

Also I heard it common enough for kombi ej22 conversions to still use the original fuel tank, so I am looking find how they did it.

I assume I need a separate return back to the petrol tank not just connect back to thetank outlet..

What I like about this self imposed project I have had many questions and it has forced me to learn

Sunnyjim, I have a couple of suggestions for you to make your engine mount setup much stronger and engineer-worthy.
Firstly, you need to weld a couple of crush tubes into your Kombi chassis rails so that when you tighten up those four bolts you don't simply crush your chassis rails together.
Secondly, it would be a great improvement to have a plate/L bracket hanging down on both the inside and outside of the chassis rails instead of just the inside - then weld those two brackets together so they form a channel.
At the moment you're putting a lot of upwards & downwards stress onto those bolts from just one side and are likely to snap them.
