Stupid computers...

I just installed XP Pro on the computer, now I'm having to use my Hand Held Computer to access the net to find the files I need to fix the big one. And yes, I'm typing this post on my HP hand held. Good thing it's colour so I can see all the pics you guys post...

Tell you what, this little unit is working better on the net than the desktop one has been the last couple of weeks.

And I've still got a couple of nasty little parasites and remains of scum ware on my system which I picked up tonight, arghhhhhh!!!! That innocent little smilies program has turned into a monster

I have XP you do need to make sure your drivers are recognised or accepted by it

Haven't had problems with it once all the initial setting up was done

Nearly got rid of it all but just a couple of little pieces left. Trouble is I don't want to disturb it again cos it'll probably start spreading in again

I swore I'd never download little play things again. I weakened:jesus

This bloody parasite doesn't want to go.

I have gone into Add-Remove Programs and deleted what I can see, into regedit and got rid of what I can find. Ran Ad-aware, deleted cookies, cleared histories

Re-booted I don't how many times and it all comes back every time

I have a .DLL I know is there but forget how to get right in to get the bastard thing. It's the one thiing stopping me from removing the last and the one that regenerates it all, ARGH!!!!!!!!!

It's not win.ini that I need, can't think what it is I have to run to edit it

Will do one more search on the net for troubleshooting sites with related info and then give up for tonight

Anyone dealt with these bastard parasites lately, they are getting in so deep and are so tricky now

Actually it wasn't the smilies that was the trouble, it was the site I tried to download an MP3 of Moody Blues song "Dr Livingston I presume" :(

Downloaded the MP3, I thought, and this offer of a FREE Smilies program popped up AS THEY DO

Going to bed, my search is only giving me info on the spyware program I already have and which isn't getting rid of the parasite:cry:cry:cry

I hate the bar they've added to Explorer and the Music Search button on my bottom tool bar:jesus

I hate the 'Help and Support', it's useless

I'll get my manual out tonight and try to remember how I used to do this manually

Everything is so web based. The only solutions you seem to be offered are new programs as fixes:(:puke

Back up and running with the desktop computer now. I love how when troubleshooting the modem it asks if you want to connect to the net to get the driver for the modem to make it work... Good one Bill Gates... Very funny... We're all laughing... Hardy ha haa...

Anyway, couldn't find any working links to driver downloads last night so drove 50km each way to get someone to burn the files onto a CD. Had fun starting this rather prolific post while surfing the net on the handheld unit though.:bounce

Isn't it a classic???? As you said, how are you meant to download a driver for a modem if you have a prob with that said modem, DAH!!!!!!

Friggin hell this Spy Ware program doesn't want to let go.

Tony the IT guy at YHA was in today working on a couple of our computers. He says he just stays away completely from any downloadable programs from the internet.

Why did I do it??????

Hey, enjoying Tassie?:)

Going to the technical bookshop tomorrow to see if there is a new idiot guides or manuals that can help me sort this out:thumb

I just upgraded our computer and loaded XP.

There is a guru called BlackViper who has a great web site for Windows users: http://www.blackviper.com

I've changed all my registry settings as suggested, kept Norton up to date and no probs yet. <fingers crossed>

Have book marked and will look tomorrow

Good info which I didn't have, like not using 'msconfig', but 'services.msc'

My Norton is always kept updated. This Spy Ware I've got hooked into my system is very advanced, it seems to be beating my system protection programs:(

Didn't use the website you posted but closed all programs down; cleared all cookies, history and temp files; and just kept searching for pieces of it in regedit.

I was getting some hints of were it might be and names of .Dll and other files by what Ad-aware was picking up

Opening so many folders to check for fragments of the bloody thing

It was mind numbing stuff and my eyes are so tired from staring at the puter screen for so long

If I didn't get everything and launched internet explorer it would all come back again, and the process had to be repeated, but I knew there was a place I hadn't looked etc.

Then finally it happened, rebooted, launched explorer and no 'my web search' tool bar or their default page. It was like a cloud had lifted:kiss
