How do shockless beams work?

its just running them with out shocks. its not only illegal but down right stupid. would you drive any other kind of car with only part of the suspension it originally came with fitted.

I figured as much, an no, wouldnt run them. Was just curious, seeing as alot of the VW shops still sell them.

Cheers Barls.

Its all to do with a certain look, you narrow the beam so far so the shocks do not fit, just leave them off. any reduction of track is illeagal and dangerous.

Can any one of the clowns that think this is acceptable give me a sound engineering reason why they do it, other than the look, it's all well and good until you are charged with culpable driving after a serious accident.

I found a Samba thread which answered my question soon after I posted it initially, it answered my question (and revealed a shit fight with regards to safety etc) so i deleted my initial post to avoid the above, haha. Barls was too quick for me though and the thread lived on.

Sorry.

Having worn out shock absorbers is dangerous when braking

so having none... ??

Me! My 1923 Vauxhall 23/60 had NO shocks from new. It also only had brakes on the rear wheels.

After fitting shocks [from a Nissan Patrol] to the rear, I could stop the car in about half the distance, as the tyres were in contact with the road more.

Still waiting for the narrow beam/no shock supporters to give a sound engineering reason why you would reduce the safety of there vehicle doing this, there is down side to all the illegal modifications, if there is enough back yard mods the aurthorities will eventually stop all modifiation's, i make the effort to modify all my vehicles through a engineer so i can gain insurance and be able to drive the car legally.

I have 4.5 narrowed beam in my split and I challenge any stock legal split to safely go around a bend as fast as I can. But yes I do run shocks.

4.5 inch reduction in track and it will go round the bend as fast as a standard width beam, that's pretty funny, if the standard front end has the same set up as yours it would win by default, with the added bonus of being legal.

Wasnt saying that it was the best set up for handling, just that it handles better and would be safer than stock.
Doesnt your KG have a narrowed beam?

Yes it does and it is being replaced this trip home from work and a set of composite wheel fitted that will restore the correct track and scrub radius and fix the other issue that arise when you fit a wheel with the wrong offset to a car, i purchased the car with it fitted and has always been my intention to remove it as soon as possible, i will be looking foward to the improvment in the handling and the reduction in wear of all the front end components

change in track IS legal in QLD within a certain amount. Can't remember off the top of me head the measurement.

Only reason to narrow a beam is on a LP Beetle that you want to run a front disc brake setup. Bout the only way you can use front discs and keep the tyres inside the arches.

UK and USA they aren't allowed to run without shox as yearly MOT guys will ream them one but it's easy to just use mini shox with rosejoint upper shox mount.

Obviously won't go round corners as quick as a std track Beetle but they still work pretty darn well :)

narrowing the leaf springs will make the front end firmer , like the effects of having a swaybar ...more u narrow the firmer it gets , and generally you lower the bus aswell so lower centre of gravity and fit drop spindles =near stock suspention travel...hope you realize that all the bus guys only fit this to show or track busses , never on the rd ...never as were all purists and love reduction hubs and 4 wheel drums

you can get LP disc brake conversions that do not increase the track negating the need to narrow the beam, fit the correct off set wheels and maintain the correct geometry. i have just bought some tarox vented rotors in 5 x 130 to suit my new link pin beam, no increase in track.
