Our 65 Notch Distraction

We call it our 'distraction' because we have our 68 to finish,.. and I still have to clean up the 62.

but,..As the American Pickers guys say,..

"The time to buy it is when you see it."

We really would like an earlier push button dash notch. Better yet I would like my old 63 back.

Just picked it up on Sunday.

The colour on my camera is bad, it is actually the very pale green original colour. Similar to our 62 bug.

It has full logbooks and some service history.

The engine number matches the delivery card number.

Don't know if it runs yet. Haven't tried. Funny story with that I'll write about later.
It does appear to be 'tired' in general mechanically.

Only repaired/repainted area appears to be drivers side rearguard and drivers door.

Has a dent bottom of drivers front guard.

The rest seems to be OG paint.

Front never smashed. Nice and straight. The back appears good too.
I think repainted guard and door is from a side scrap perhaps.
Will only really know when the guard comes off I guess.

2 areas of rust only found at the moment.
Drivers heater channel.
Passenger rear under the rear guard behind the wheel.

Floors seem ok. Surface rust but not holes through apparently.

Interior is shabby.

Chassis number 315104114
So this makes it a '65 right??
Car number 104114??

Is that world wide production, or just Aus type 3's.

Looks great Carl.

If it's been sitting for years, pop off the tappet covers before you crank it over and sus out if there's surface rust insidce the engine, rocker gear and valve springs. If no rust, start er up, if rusty.......not so good to.

Yes, Matt,.. your voice was in my head. About not trying to start it before checking under the covers.

I think the old owners were surprised when I didn't want to try and start it.

Lots of things to check before turning the key. :spin:

I think they said it was 6 years ago that it was parked.

Well for now it's joined the 'museum' in my shed.

Have a certain blue 68 to pay for first,..

and wash the 62 before Sunday.

The word 'Hoarder' is in my head for some reason,...

That notch looks great.

Yes 65 model

That other number, is it the number from behind the spare tyre? If it is its some sort of Australian production body number that the Aussie produced Type3s had till about 69.

No, it's just the numbers after 315.

My question is,.. Is that Aus production or world wide production?

Does anyone know what the correct colour front indicators for 1965 are?

Because we have a photo of it from the previous owner from when they bought it off the original owner, and it had clear lenses.

Clear indicator lens for 65

I think VW Australia was given blocks of chassis to use. So if you look your chassis number up on Samba it will say Nov 64 but VW Australia probably did not use that number for a few months after that.

The chassis number is not the number of cars built in production. There is a different numbering system altogether for earlier cars.

The number behind the spare wheel means something about the number of Aussie produced bodies I think.

I'm not sure how these numbers work on type3's

I think your number will start with 316 = notch

Hi Ash,
Yes, we love them.
I think Emily is fine with me buying these old cars,. .so long as they have the cool old books to go with,.. she spends hours over them. Must the Graphic designer in her.

I notice you also have a 65 Notch,.. are there any pics anywhere?
What's the story with it?

Hmm,.. Thinking of selling this and putting the funds towards finishing our 68.:sniffle:

What do people think a realistic price is for this?

I think we need to assume it needs an engine overhaul.

Details as above in first post.^^^^^

I've been asked for a few more pics on this one.
So went down to the shed and had a good look at it.
The bad first.
Found 4 x areas of rust.

The good is it doesn't appear to have been hit front or back.
The repainted panel on the drivers side rear shows no damage from a rear hit, so I suspect it was a side scrape.

and again, not sure what stopped the previous owner from driving it, as I've not attempted to get it going.

Below is the engine bay as found.

Firstly the plastic fuel filter sitting on top of the engine!!!!!!!

Mixture of leads of 3 different types and age.

Note the smoke butt sitting on the belt cover.

Hmmm,.. engine, petrol, and a smoke.

General state of filth.

Hence I don't have much respect for the previous mechanic.
Top work!
