My new ride!
Hi everybody!!!
Well, new member here, finally got round to getting a proper car!!! Bought this the other day, now the work begins... luckily I am a panel beater so
the car should be ready to roll in oooh say 2 years lol!!!
Shes a 58, with a bit of rust but pretty straight.. She got Semaphores as well!!!
going for a total body off resto, and rebuild. The plan is to get her Resto Call'ed on classic EMPI 5 spokes, lowered and shortened front end too. I
better let the missus drive it when shes finished, cos she aint gonna see me for a year lol!!
Ok piccies:

and heres my inspiration..... only 1 year away (sighs...)

I will be nagging everyone one here for tech info in the following months (i'll search here first lol) so be warned :P
First question: Whats the best owner/bible/masterpiece book i should get (a'la Haynes, Gregorys etc...) i used to have the Haynes Manual but thats
long gone...
Cheers in advance..

Hey Mark, and welcome to the forum.
Looks like a bit of work, but all is possible. The first investment I would be making is the Complete Idiots Guide to Volkswagens, made by John
Muir... I think the actual title is something else.. But it does mention idiots..
Easy to read, even for experts to novices.
I like the 'after' pic.. Bad news is they are chromed Empi 5's.. Which is hard to do in Oz as it is illegal.. bummer.. Cause I want some too!!
You should find everything you need here, and once again, welcome to the site.

Ehh whaaa???? Chrome EMPI's are illegal?? In what way? I see that many chrome rims surely theryre not all illegal?
Cheers for the welcomes fellas, I'll be a post whore for sure on here, with the build and subsequent club/event postings and the like!

Mark, it is okay to have chromed rims from the factory, but can't have them chromed afterwards as it 'weakens' the rims. It is legal in the States,
so if you know someone...
Bummer huh? There is also some dramas chroming alloy wheels, but I don't know that much about that.. Similar theory I believe. However, you can
always get the alloy ones polished, and pending on the job, will look almost as good..

one word "sweet as", I am sure it will look great when finished, VW's are like women, treat them nice, take it slow, and buy them nice pressents.. |

Wheels
And when you do get around to buying wheels check the off sets.
The picture you show has a narrowed beam for sure.
And most standard 5 spokes seem to have bad offsets.
Everything 36HP !
Change over king and link spindles
6-12volt semaphores

Welcome to the forum...... looks like you have a big job ahead of you but being a panel beater will surely make it a labour of love.
Can't wait to see the progress over the next year.

Chrome Empi 5's saw some at Classic Vee Dubs in Sydney, went there over the weekend.. yeah nice chrome ones... (those maybe factory legal, you have
to checkout with them)
I got some polished ones... easier to maintain I rekon :P
anyways good luck! Hope to see another mad bug on the road of Melbourne.
Cheers~!

just to bring a really old post to the top..... since Mark last posted on this thread, he sold the Beetle to me and I imported her to the UK.
I'm assuming if the links to the pics weren't broken, she looked like this?

Well she now looks like this:

I don't know if Mark will get an email about this reply or not, but it would be cool to see some old pics of her if anyone has any
