VW COPIED.

After looking through an old 1959 Launceston Examiner Newspaper, i noticed something.
It read.

VW COPIED

Volksfiatovitch is the irreveret name bestowed in Western Europe on the new russian, rear engined car.Though the car owes quite a lot to the Fiat 600, it's engine is almost a scaled down replica to the Volkswagen's. It is an air cooled flat four, with pushrod operated, verticle overhead valves, and it has the same compression ratio as the Vw. However, total capacity is only 750cc. (Against about 1197cc.) And the output is about 20mph compared with 36mph with the Volkswagen.

Does anyone have any pics of this rare beast???

Cheers 1963 Empi Radar.

Trying to find info on that car I came across this an air cooled V8!!!!

...a summary by Gareth Jones

The T603 project was begun in 1953, after the Czechoslovakian government issued the order for Tatra to design and build a car suitable for official duties, to replace the Volgas and ZILs that were used after production T87 ceased the previous year. The car would have six seats and an engine capacity of not more than 3.6 litres.

The heart of the new car was the newly developed 603 engine by Jiri Klos. A 2,545cc air-cooled V8, its specification was advanced; oversquare (75 x 72mm), with a single centre camshaft and hemispherical combustion chambers. The engine's first application was in the 4x4 T805, and in its 'military spec' it developed 75 bhp, but it had also been used in some interesting Tatra competition cars, like the T601 Tatraplan Montecarlo and the T602 and T607 sports racing cars. In the new T603 saloon, however, it produced 95 bhp at 5000 rpm.

will try to get a pic

Matt.

1963 Empi Radar,

Here are some more pics, I think these are more like the ones talked about in that news paper article. They are called Tatra and were made in Czechoslovakia Apparrently they first surfaced in the 1930's and Adolph didn't like how similar they were to the KDF wagen, so he made them stop production. They resurfaced after the war and there have been many models since.

Start with this site:

I've worked it out! A guy named John Long and his wife went on a tour to the three oceans that surround North America in a restored 1947 Tatra T87. That is one of his photos, so that'll be his wife in the back, presumably looking at a map. Here is his website with the story of the tour, and plenty of great pics:

With the triple lights & boat tail rear, I think it has more in common with the American Tucker.

Whilst looking for VW information I got the drag co-efficient of the 1934 Tatra T77 - wait for it - 0.212 !

And that was with a three-flat-piece windscreen.
