ok so you wanna cheap off road vehicle with style???
a soft top? A MANX
this is what i did..
i found an old manx it was in pretty much original condition ie gel coat vg 1300 swing axle gearbox vg1200 sp motor, link pin front end, all original manx barwork, soft top etc......
i bought it because it also had.....
new steering box, new 4 wheel disc brake conversion inc brand new slotted rotors ,pads etc on all four wheels, new golf m/cyl, new custom wheels(powdercoated) alloy steering colum, boxes of urethane bushes, AND (important to me) all original paperwork from its build in brisbane in 1982

est cost up to $15,000

i intend for this buggy to be capable off road so either i rebuild the old floor pan it has no rust but its a swingaxle and has deen better days i opt for a refabrication so the buggy is stripped and a new heavy duty floor pan is the order of the day. gel coat was definately showing its age fiberglass aint that hard to work with but to do it properly is another thing so the stripped body and bonnet went off to the panelbeaters to be filled and resprayed in 2pac and have this done right

roll cage/bar
roll cages/bar are mandatory to have in a soft top fiberglass bodied car not only do they offer protection from a roll over but the add tortional rigidity to it too plus they are great help getting in and out of a car with no doors with my roll cage i have a 7 point 2 in front two behind and one on the tunnel and two on the firewall it has a front and rear hoop tied together with 3 bars as well as extra side intrusion diagonal bars and a rear diagonal bar
you can buy a custom standard 6 point roll cage for about $1,600 and build on from there

the chassis and the roll cage needed paint so it wsa off to the blasters blasted and then painted top and bottom

I have no idea what you where expecting as a bottom line but most of the prices above are listed on
the website and others I made you aware of when your dropped your car off. I am sure from past
experience you are well aware of how long it takes to do most things and should find that the times I
specified are realistic.

Now that I have gone through the build in some detail and worked out the parts and labour I expect it
to take to complete the build and hand over the keys to a fresh looking buggy with the above specs in
tip top running order, with QLD RWC if required I can offer you two options.

Option 1 – I can go firm on the above price and will wear any additional costing or labour that is
required to get the job done. If accepted this would mean that the Buggy would be completed as
specified above for the bottom line of $13683.50 with a balance owing of $12 183.50 fixed.

Option 2 – We treat the above figures as an estimate and I provide you with a detailed invoice upon
completion and the price goes up or down as dictated by the itemised invoice in line with our terms
and conditions.

I have obviously included some fudge in my above figures to cover my ass in most minor cases. I am
confident they are reasonably accurate and should give you a good guide in making a decision.

Anyway I had better get some sleep now I have buggies to build in the morning.

My brother and I helped a mate re-build a street Buggy at home. It got a lot of new stuff including wheels and a full-tilt Pobjoy 1916cc etc

I'm building a street bug and have spent well over 15k and I don't even have a rolling pan yet :( I've had some bits done by COR and to be honest the price often stings but you find me someone else doing custom fabrication that is happy to take your business and give you a guarantee. When I pay retail its because I'm to busy or I can be making more doing what I'm good at. :)

building a manx is alot cheaper than most people would have thought.
with quality dedicated shops offering everything from woe to go and all the backup you could imagine why not get into one of these projects for next summer

In short Brad doesn't care ...

Custom Offroad Components is as far as I know the only Business left out there in Aussie VW world who will provide a quote on such work. This is a double edged weapon as it opens the doors to people saying they can do it cheaper and that we are over priced.

As I have said too many people over the years who say this, we are not Bunnings, we do not price match and if you wish to take our quote elsewhere and they provide you with a written quote doing the same work for less then get them to do it.

Building any Custom Car is not a cheap exercise. It cost Custom Offroad $5000 a week just to open the doors so the cost of getting work done is calculated from this. It is not a pluck which varies from day to day. Anyone who thinks there is good money in doing what Custom Offroad does is dreaming. To do stuff correctly and without crap quality takes time, money and experience.

When we provide a written quote we don’t mind if people decide to tell others and post it on the net. If we did then we would give a verbal quote like most shops and then we could argue, dodge and weave to get around doing what we said we would.

Anyway thanks to all those people who let me know about the thread.

Now back to my Super Iguana …..

It is actually $260 000 turn over per year plus parts.

A real job ... trust me working on VW's and dealing with VW people is the hardest thing I have ever done, that is why I went back to my other job and left running the business and dealing with customers to people who are much better at it than myself.
