My Type 3 Fastback


Hey, not too long ago I purchased my second Type 3 Fasty and I thought I better take some pics to show y'all!
She's a 1972 1600 Auto, came with 4 brand new tires, mp3 head unit, 6 speaker system and a few other bits and peices. This is what she looked like when I picked her up...

So far I've...
Lowered her a few inches, checked, resurfaced and adjusted the brakes, rebuilt the carbs and gave her a tune up, serviced the engine, washed and polished her, painted the wheels in blood red, removed any non conforming stickers...
and just generally checked over everything!

Near future plans are to buy some chrome stock rims, whitewalls, start cutting out what rust there is bit by bit, lower her a bit more, add some decent sway bars and shocks and upgrade the brakes.

A vote for the red here too! Tip: until you get your chromies/white walls, the best way to 'lighten" these up on a body with trim (which your has) is a cheap set of dress rims. not the VW ones of the day, just simple 15" generics from auto 1, supa cheap, etc. they give your wheels outer diameter the definition that black on red loses. IMHO (WTF does IMHO mean? don't answer.)

Hey Staggers, Following my last type 3 lowering exercise (my crushed foot is still not 'right') and always looking to gather others' experience, here's a couple of VERY typical questions:
what rubber are you running front and back and is there any rubbing (full lock or over the bumps?);
do you remember how many splines you went front and back? (I find the spline question a little generic, for example, my 1st square had been lowered and raised again before i got to it, so who knows where "factory" height was...and of course after 35 years of twisting, it wasn't sitting 'square' anyway).

PS my dress rims came off with the arrival of the white walls also ;)

I'm running the stock 165/80 R15's, lowered two inner splines at the front and one outer at the rear. I used a dot punch to mark a permanent reference mark as to where the stock suspension was.

All in all lowering the whole car takes around three to three and a half hours, the front is piss easy, you can do it in about 20 minutes, where as the rear is pretty fiddly. Just make sure you don't dislodge both inner and outer splines on the rear at once.
As for steering, the front scrubs at low speeds only on hard lock, but that will be fixed when I get around to bolting up the guard roller. Apart from that there's no hassle. Make sure you have your wheel alignment adjusted to suit post lowering, depending on how low you go, also... you may have to get shorter shock absorbers .
With the front end if you decide to go two inner splines or more (Maybe even for one, but I'm not sure) you'll have to rethink bump stop options because the bump stop has to be removed. I used a generic bolt on bump stop relocated to another position... which I'll also rethink at a later date.

Another thing, make sure you mark the rear spring plates and swing arms so they go back exactly how they came apart, otherwise your toe in/out might be wrong. Again, you MIGHT have to have a four wheel alignment carried out, but definately front.

A quick question... Where did you source your white wall tires, or are they just white wall inserts? I'm assuming you're from down south?

Thanks for your detailed reply Staggers. I previously lowered another square and wish I'd had all those tips then. i got quicker with each adjustment, not doubt this time even better. Some follow up on your post:

Re white wall tires: in in Sydney and got a set of Atlas inserts from Antique Tyres in Ingleburn (south of Sydney, (02) 9618 2788). They were mailed to me (too easy!). I got a local tyre shop to fit em for $20 each "guaranteed". Worth it for me as I could not have done it with my own equipment, and when one started moving off they redid no problems. There is a lot of 'down' talk about the inserts but the set cost 1/2 the price of one 'real' tyre (!) and for me was a great way to get the look and see if I even liked it rather than spending $1000 on 'real' rubber for a car that, let's face it doesn't 'deserve' it. Even if it was a full resto, these cars didn't originally have white walls, so I struggle with the idea for a type 3. the down sides on the inserts: 'they move'... so get em fitted properly; 'they stain from the back with the rubber moving'... I'm yet to see it (but it could happen over time); 'put a lubricant behind to stop staining'...can you be bothered? I am happy to buy a new set every 2 years! One thing I have heard is the worst thing you can use on white walls is white wall cleaner! I don't know if that applies to inserts, but much to my delight simple kitchen spray (Nifti) cleans them up beautifully.

By 'bolting up the guard roller' I mean I have a guard roller which you bolt onto the hub after removing the wheel, used to roll the guards/guard lip.
As for shorter shocks I mean ones that won't bottom out before the suspension does.
I removed the old one and put a smaller bolt on bump stop so I still have a decent amount of travel. I put it in a slightly different position to give me more travel.
