My advice is to not do it, it's pointless. The price of diesel in Australia is silly and counteracts the efficiency advantage. But that doesn't really answer your question :)

i know the MK 5 escort 1.8 diesels fit as there was a few done while i was still in the uk, i know i have a review some where containing one,i'll try and dig it out for u. The pug diesels fit to,they are quite small and affective.

subaru has released a diesel in the outback model in europe this year. no mention of an oz release of the engine tho. similar dimensions to the petrol motor.



see.... air and water do mix ;)

If you can find a PUG 1.6 HDi motor the car would go great. Fuel economy would be unprecedented. I have the Pug 2.0 HDi and it pushes a 1400kg wagon along like a larger V6 would. Just a few technical hurdles though. Pugs are all fly by wire now, no throttle cable. There'd be a lot of electronics involved and you'd need to find someone to help you with it or use an aftermarket ECU. Although most of the aftermarket ECUs are not designed for diesel. I'd start asking a lot of questions before I spent any money. THere is a big aftermarket diesel scene growing in europe, be good to tap into that. Harding European in Qld could probably give you some tips too.

Not impossible, but you'd be the first in Oz to do this.

P.s. Wes might be right about cost vs efficiency. :fakesniff:

Just about to put a Isuzu c223T diesel into a Kombi. Conversion plates are available, but the engines are over 200kg, so not good for a bug. You can also get conversion plates for the toyota van turbo diesel engines that come in as jap imports, but $2000+. If you look hard you'll find old nissan sd23 diesels for a couple of hundred dollars and volks conversions do a plate for these for a cheap, but not overly powerful conversion. Must agree about the bio diesel, but I'm heading in that direction so I can tow a rather heavy boat and I'm about to get rid of my newish Merc van. The engine was free and these things have cult following in the US and Canada in the Chev Pup, they claim up to 800 000km out of a rebuild, at my 10k a year I should be set for a while.

I'd love to head in the vw tdi direction, but have you seen the price of those engines in Aus!!! You can pick up the pug engines cheap here, but the guy in the UK that does the conversion plates refused to send downunder.:mad:I'll give it another few years and then look at the tdi again, i.e. when i've finished this damn Architecture degree!!! The isuzu won't be the quickest thing in the world, but it will be a bit of fun to play around with. Other option is the ej20 I've got in the shed, but no ecu,air flow metre, or loom. I should make my mind up and sell one of them before the wife starts looking through the shed:lol:

Seagull, I might be interested in that Toyota superchager tho, but not for a couple of weeks if you still have it? A nice solid 1776 with an electronic 009 in the bus ATM, the charger might help me get over the low end torquel probs I have in the Adel Hills! Then again it might just be my shity driving habbits:lol:

yeah i'm also looking at a 1600 tubo deisel for my mk1.

basically rebuild a 1.6 diesel and throw a turbo on.

i think it's worth it, but that's me.

i'm not sure if it is the best option but looking into it

Hey Aaron,

Have a look around on vwdiesel.net, you might rethink the idea of putting a turbo on one of our old mk1 diesel engines. Just remember the cost of intake manifold from overseas, a turbo that is from a similar sized diesel so it spools on early enough, and I'm not %100 sure if the Aussie injector pumps are up to a turbo, but have a look around on vwdiesel. The other problems our engines have is a lack of oil injectors to keep the pistons cool and the heads like cracking. When I took all of this into consideration it was going to be cheaper to inport a motor from the UK. But in saying that I've been given the old isuzu, so that will do for a bit of playing around until I can afford to go for a Tdi.

dude, i want the same engine but the N/A one, just a std C223 on my bug, do you recomend it?
how bout mounting it to a std gearbox?
engine size and engine room space?
do i have to cut engine room borders?

i used it on my isuzu pickup it still kicikin nicely even after 750.000km ++
