subaru rear main seal


I'm losing heaps of oil...guessing its the rear main seal...whats involved in replacing it on an EJ22? been 20 years since i did this on V8s etc....:no:

I havn't done mine yet, but I am led to believe you can just pri it out with a screwdiver and tap a new one back in.

The plate you see in this photo ( Black ) does not have a seal it is sealed with grey OEM sealent. You can get this from repco in a small tube .

The black / white cover plate in plastic seem to leek , while the ally ones dont.

PS get a factory rear main seal as well

Yeah I got mine out by attacking it with the few screwdrivers and levering it out. Just mkae sure you don't mark or scratch the crank or engine surface the seal goes onto. And, when you put the new seal in, make sure it doesn't go in too far, this is the reason I had to put a new one in grr, they don't bottom out, and the front of the seal should be pretty much flush with where it goes into the engine.
