Matt's 76 Bay...got some 44 hpmx's
Hi everyone...Just joined AussieVeedubbers, although I have been lurking on here for ages. I am on Kombiclub too (as mafu) but don't post on there
very much...I've had my bus for about 8 years now but have never done a proper fully detailed build thread. I need to take more pics but here is a
teaser to start you off...

Ok everyone took some photos today of the old girl. The back is actually a bit lower but it is up high at the moment because the engine is out. I have
just rebuilt the engine and you can see the long block together in some pics. Also there is a custom sunroof install - when i got the kombi it had a
dirty after market rag top sunroof that was fucked and gheycore. I couldnt find a kombi roof section as they are getting rarer these days. Most people
fix them up rather than part them out. So the only good solution was to put in another sunroof, but rather than another dirty aftermarket ragtop I
bought the roof of a pajero from a wreckers and then cut the section out to suit the hole in the kombis roof. I then panel beated it all and smoother
it and what you are left with is a modern style glass electric sliding sunroof that doesnt leak or look shit. Also this year I had a new headlinging
installed a full length microbus delux style one in the original perforated off white german fabric. Looks boss. But anyway I'll let the pics do the
talking.

Hi eveyrone, thanks for the comments!
Actually, I am originally from canberra, though I now live on the Sunshine Coast, the Mercedes with Canberra plates is my Grandmother's! Haha she was
up visiting for a while.
I definately would love some porsche twists in charcoal! though the AMG hammerheads are replicas and only cost me 300 on ebay...a good compromise i
feel. Also they bolt up to the standard hubs no worries.
I have been on German look.com plus shop talk forums and all the rest haha...Unfortunately motor is fairly standard, as I intend this to become my
daily driver (and Im a poor uni student - all work on this bus has been done by me including paint etc) . Well the engine is a type 4 after all so I
guess that still qualifies as German Look lol - plus this bus was the first in Oz to run Red 9 design coil over suspension....Ive had them in there
for years, except I havnt had the chance to test them out due to this old girl being off the road for soo long!! (Ive owned this bus for 9 years) .
Engine wise, I just gave her a top end freshen up with new rings and seals etc, valve grind and so on. I have made a set of custom extractors for the
old girl out of some rusty standard heater boxes....I just cut the external casing off and you are left with an awesome looking cast header with huge
cooling fins!! It looks awesome and is a free mod! Looks as though it would help hot air dissipate better too! The rest of the exhaust utilises one of
those shit house thunderbird extractors (4 into 1) which i cut the flange off and made a 2 1/2 inch flange instead. The rest of the exhaust is a full
2 and a 1/2 inch straight through mandrel bent exiting through a big ass zetti hot dog. I pretty happy with it, though my welds need a bit of
imporvement. None the less she is loud as! It sounds like an old 911!
Anyways I will post some more pics....

The last pic is to show you how clean my floor pan is! When I was 16 I got underneath with a wire brush, baremetaled everywhere and POR15's the
whole lot in gloss grey. Possibly the cleanest baywindow undercarriage in Aus???

Also ground the welds back on the exhaust, then rewelded to ensure a good seal. Then wrapped the end section in heat wrap.
Also took the gross sticker of the muffler too...

The front seat are the standard items recovered in some TMI low back covers for an earler model bay. They didn't fit exactly 100 percent but I
managed ot get them on with a bit of fettling. They still need a little more adjustment to get them perfect but they look pretty good so far.
Made an aerial top out of a golf ball. My aerial broke in half a few years back, this is an easy way to keep it looking cool haha. Bit of a stumpy
though

Bought some rubber matting today and made a cardboard template of the back area before cutting out a new boot mat area. Looks pretty good I think. Not
too far off original style. Also the original spare tyre is in with the original strap and put the original cover back over it too.

Thanks for the compliments!
No I havn't got any plastic sheeting behind my interior panels...Thats a good idea though, I forgot about the front door vents...I will probably
make some up for the front door cards...I might even just glue some glad wrap to the back of them? Does anyone think the plastic is nessecary on the
rear door cards as they have no air vents?
Thanks!

the water comes in past the window rubber and the front door it come down the window class, all cars have a seal behind the trim, just go have a look
at another car in your pic. most cars also have drain holes in the bottom of the door and sillls to let water out.

Bought myself a little pressie today... new 44 hpmx empis... brand new and never used, but bought second hand off a guy who bought a cb performance
bolt in efi kit instead. Ended up getting the whole kit (manifolds and linkage fittings, filters etc etc etc) for $750. There are mixed opinions about
the HPMX, some say theyre crap, other say theyre better than webers. Either way these carbs are the second generation which are apparantly meant to be
much much better and by the looks of things they have good fittings and nice castings etc. The only way to tell is to give them a shot! I will be
fitting them soon and then getting a dyno tune at some point when time and funds allow.
