The 66 should be 6 volt,12volt came in 1968 and had a 12v sticker inside the R/H door pillar,or lift the rear seat and check the battery.

Or just look and see if it has 6v or 12v stamped on the top of the generator.

Hi Muz

Yes, it would have originally been 6 volts.. but Most VWs have now been changed to 12 volts ...

Most 6 volt stuff is hard to come by..

check any electrical part, it should have the voltage on it..
Coil,, generator, light bulbs.. etc..

guessing I would think it would be 12 volts now...

Put volt meter across the battery terminals and test the voltage. If it has a little more than 6 volts and starts its a 6 volt car still. If it has more than 12 volts it's been converted.

then go to option 2 and lift the seat and check the battery,6 fill lids = 12volt 3=6 volt or as Joel have a look on the generator or coil for the voltage.

Thanks for all the replies guys :)
No battery in the car when i got it, (probably fell out of the huge rust hole that is in its place).
Will check the globes tomorrow to see what is on them.
(should have thought of this before)

don't forget all the relays, voltage reg and also the fan housing need to be changed as the 12v gen is a larger diameter and wont fit.

have fun;)

i have a parts notchback which has a "12v" sticker

then just need to change to alternator and starter, is that correct?...or dizzy as well?

let me know a price on your parts please bushed...will have to wait until the new year....wife smashed her car the other night :grind:
