Type 3 Front Seat Adjuster Cams

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/111256/type-3-front-seat-adjuster-cams

Fossil ·

Am after the "cams" for the drivers/passengers front seats - these are the cams that adjust the back of the seat to be moved up or laid back - see pic

Thanks
Bert

Fossil ·

Other pic -

Fossil ·

Previous photos of driver seats cams show how damaged they are so here's a couple of the passenger seat cams - If anyone can help with drivers ones please PM me 😉

vw54 ·

swap them left to right

Fossil ·

Cheers Dave, wasn't sure if they could be swapped and couldn't see they couldn't be ...... found someone who may have a good set they just have to remove the seat from the wreck, check them and get the cams off it.

Need the passenger seat ones in for the Mrs who has a shot back and needs seat upright, I manage with drivers as it currently is but would like it more upright as my back shot also ...... although after driving it from Nowra to Brisbane and feeling stiff and sore the next morning was the best the back adn legs have felt for years.

vw54 ·

If you do change make sure you lube good with some molly grease or similar clean all the old gunk off first

they are held on with roll pins through the shaft the cams are cast alloy and can be fragile so take care

may be yr seats need re padding as well

Fossil ·

Thanks Dave, had seen the roll pins prior to removing the seats = very small and expect they'll be fun to get out so will treat with extreme care.👍

Seats getting a bit thin on padding but still quite comfortable & something to look at down the track - 1st thing is deciding if to remove OTT exhaust and replacing with Vintage Speed as you had mentioned in my thread in the Type3 section

Fossil ·

Scored a passenger seat with what looked like good cams but when removed the shaft where it goes through the seatbase are worn ...... disappointed yeah but found someone doing 3D printing and willling to take it on as a project seeing these things can't be found as replacement parts.

Anyone with a Type 3 and looking for seat adjuster cams stay tuned as may have a contact for you once we get a test cam made and tested they will become available (I'm purely the tester on these and having to pay for them for myself) the guy doing them will decide final price and they will be 3D Printed in Steel medium.

Also decided to move from the TriMill Stainless Steel Over The Top exhaust and so it is up for sale - still on the fastback and will post this in the Parts For Sale Section - location is Brisbane North Side if anyone looking for a good condition system.

cruiser ·

Id be interested in the printed cams too.

Metal printed I guess?

Fossil ·

cruiser wrote:Id be interested in the printed cams too.

Metal printed I guess?
Contact advised printed in steel which is a steel matrix bond together with bronze. Rough (very rough) indication of price is $150.00 a pair - may change if quantity ordered ...... I felt this was fair as the ones in the pic below were offered up for sale @ US $160 and went very quickly.

Have also provided him with this picture of unpainted cams which has been useful for him to refine what he has put together from one of my cams.

cruiser ·

How have you come up with the design file? Are they doing this?

I have once bought SS metal parts from http://www.shapeways.com/ May be worth looking at too?

Fossil ·

Cruiser, I've no idea how the contact is putting the 3D drawings together ....... I've just supplied him with a cam so he can put his 3D together and confirmed some measurments + the above picture which gives him a clearer view as the cams I have are all painted black and varios level of wear.

I'm his test pilot on these and so once he is satisfied with the design and measurements, he's doing/getting a plastic print done to check all measurements against what he has and then will return to me so I can do a fit up and check operation before we go down the "metal" print route as we want to be sure they are as true as possible and will work.

Thanks for that link.

cruiser ·

Sounds like you are on the right track with testing out a plastic one first.

Maybe they could be a bit cheaper than $150 pr if you get 5-10 pairs and sell the extras too?

wombatventures ·

I'm in Bert, If they work well we'll get a set for the Notch. It may not want to run properly but at least I'll be comfortable when it is.
Terry

Fossil ·

No worries Terry, will keep people posted.

Cruiser, bulk order I expect will be offered but by contact who will set price and time line to order price will be determined by this and other relavant things associated with supply. I'm paying my way on this to get it done including the test unit in plastic is @ my expense to make sure they work ..... others will benefit by means of all the work being done and a unavailable part being offered.

Fossil ·

Things have progressed a bit on the hunt for these NLA parts - see this thread http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=111806

Any type 3 owners out there with front seats that they can't adjust the incline of the backrest then you may be interested in a set (1 per seat of right and left cam).

Fossil ·

Update has been provided by nils in the thread http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=111806

Fossil ·

We have commitments for 5 seats now so need another 5 for our minimum order of 10 to go to manmufacture 👍

Check out http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=111806 if interested

Fossil ·

Have been conversing with nils and this update provided -

Owing to things happening we'd like to go to production at the end of this week (Friday 13th January 2017) for these seat cams - minimum order of 10 seats (pairs/sets of 1 left and 1 right) required by the CNC Milling company to make it happen.

We have on AussieVeeDubbers interested parties Nils (nilza) - 1 seat, KahunaKombi/Fossil (me) - 1 seat, Wombatadventures - 2 seats, Cruiser - 1 seat, Tomaselli - 1 seat, bus914 - 1 seat. Couple of other not committed people yet but following them up.

To process payment and delivery details please PM or email nils for how he wants you to pay.

PRICE - $165 AU per seat + $12-20 AU total postage depending on location

On the Samba we have KTPhil - 1 seat, hem1tp - 1 seat & Clatter - 1 seat.

Will continue to monitor this thread and if you can confirm you've paid that'd great.

Fossil ·

Ok so time for an update.

1st order for 10 seats (1 right and 1 left cam) was placed and ETA is 24th January ....... fully committed to SO for any one interested in the 2nd order let Nils or me know = PM or post.

Price from a CNC Milling mob came in late & was more in line with what was expected SO price is now $100 per seat + postage (I believe this is still $12.20 but location may alter it). All pricing is controlled by Nils and will depend on exchange rates, fees and delivery costs) but as you can see a considerable saving on initial price. 😀😵👍

Luckyphil ·

I saw these cams on Sunday and they are a real work of art and cheap too.

Fossil ·

Thanks Phil,

Nils has done a great job on these, I got my seat (pair) yesterday and doing the fit and function test and all looks good so far. 👍

Fossil ·

CNC milled 6061 aluminium cams arrived and test fit to wrecked seat done -

Fossil ·

A better picture of these cams -

Fossil ·

Alternate contact point for these cams - https://www.facebook.com/NLAautoparts/

(NOTE: I just wanted a pair & found someone in Australia willing to take on the project & who just happened to be extremely VW friendly - NLAautoparts so talk to Nils if you're after some)

Fossil ·

Fitment and function thread updated https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=111806&page=2

Fossil ·

Got my order of new CNC'd 6061 Al seat cams & with the help of my friend John (retired Fitter/Turner/Boiler Maker) Friday was fit up day.

Getting seat out and apart was easy enough to reveal the condition of the original cams -

Right one well and truely knackered >

Left one not in great shape either >

Showed how people didn't know how to adjust seat incline in the first place and 101 rule release pressure on the back rest DON'T try to assist with your weight.

Now wonder if the leaver releasing the backrest will work better and the function will now be smoothly/as like new.

A better picture of the Cams >

Without going into the fine detail, there was some damage on the left side of the seat where the cam is housed so this had to be repaired by a bit of metal beating and filing. The damage and resultant change of profile made just enough difference across the width of the seat to mean the right cam needed a little filing on the radii on the 2nd & 3rd steps/lugs - this took a few fits then remove of the shaft with cams until we were satisfied a smoothly transition through the full range of adjustment was happening 🙂

To the final fit and they look this -

Right Cam (before MolyGrease)

Left Cam (before MolyGrease)

Once the MolyGrease was applied and a few movements through the range we were happy as to how smooth it was and so put back in Paddy - test seating = weird feeling the backrest at the shoulder blades when before it was only at the base of the spine 😉

As for the access to the back seat ...... 🙄 ..... no more fighting to get it to move  ....... smooth as the day out of the factory 😀

Taken some time to get to this but been worth it to have a NLA part made up and copies being sent to the USA for other Type3 owners as well as to some in Australia.

BIG thanks to Nils for taking this on and delivering 😎

nils ·

I'm going to have to ask the next person I meet with a Type 3 to show me the function of these. Just so I can appreciate them better

Fossil ·

Any Type3 owners out there with front seats needing these can contact nils as he's ramping up for 2nd order 😏

Fossil ·

Another happy Type3 owner who bought these - WombatAdventures PM'd me "The cams are spot on. They fit perfectly and work well. Also really easy to do once you get at them"

wombatventures ·

Short No word summary......
👍!
👍👍👍👍👍👍❗

Fossil ·

Hey Terry,
You downloaded those pictures 🤪

wombatventures ·

Finally... the seat cams...
They work great!
Working out how to get the seat out took almost as long as fitting the cams. For those who've never done it there is a small tab on the tunnel side slider that once you push it down allows the seat to slide forward into the footwell and slide right off the runners! No bolts, spanners, easy as!
My cams were pretty worn, mainly because a prvious owner had turned them so hard that they were jammed into one spot. they had also wired the seat back catch so that it could be flipped forward without having to use the latch...😠

wombatventures ·

The Cams were pretty worn as you can see in these pics.

wombatventures ·

This is how I dismantled them...
First unclip the spring that tension the shaft to the seat base.
Gently tapped out the roll pin on the adjustment knob (nearest to the door side of the seat). Bert tells me it's a 3mm drift. I didn't have the right size so squared of the end of a long 3mm nail and gently tapped it out.
Do the same with the small end cap on the tunnel side of the seat.
There should be a small plastic bush that the seat back arm rides on the shaft. Take these out gently. Mine are pretty worn but I doubt I'll ever get new ones so I put them back in. Something could be used as a replacement I'm sure.
I couldn't quite slide the seat back off the shaft so gently tapped out the roll pins from both cams and then tapped the shaft towards the adjustment knob end till I could get the back off.

wombatventures ·

I slid the shaft out by knocking one cam along towards the middle until the shaft would clear seat frame and slide it out. Make sure to note which cam goes which end!
The cams should slide off the shaft without much effort.
The new cams look brilliant alongside the old flogged out ones.
Assembly is basically the reverse of dismantling.
Make sure everything lines up as you go. Cams are on the right way round and in line with each other.
And put the springs back on the right way!

wombatventures ·

I made sure everything was functioning properly before adding grease.
As has been said before by Bert and Nils...
TAKE THE WEIGHT OFF THE SEAT BACK WHEN ADJUSTING YOUR BACKREST!
This will limit the wear and these new cams will out last the car.

Thanks Bert for getting the ball rolling on these and Thanks Nils for making it happen!
Rating... Bloody Brilliant! 👍👍

wombatventures ·

GREASE...
Regularly!

wombatventures ·

Now its time to do the other one and get some trimming done....
👍

Fossil ·

Terry, great detail ....... makes my post look wimpy on what I did 😂
I can see the slight refinement Nils did to the cams before he sent yours = helped with fit & function 👍

wombatventures ·

Please don't look at that photo of the seat and all the junk in the background!
😢
Yes, parts of my yard make Steptoe and Son look tidy!
But there is some good gear in there, and a free dump day coming up!
This weekend's mission is to get the Notch back out to the road, and clean it up before Day of the Volkswagen.

nils ·

Hi Terry, thanks for the write up props! Great to see they went in as planned.
and thanks again to Bert for being a driving force and r+d man for these.

wombatventures ·

After looking at Berts my original ones don't look too bad. Drove with the new ones today. How good is it to be able to use the back of the seat!

Fossil ·

wombatventures wrote:After looking at Berts my original ones don't look too bad. Drove with the new ones today. How good is it to be able to use the back of the seat!
Luxury 😎

Terry, I was surprised @ how screwed mine were - fully explained why the backrest stayed in position even though the knob turned - it's so much comfortable now to have the backrest in position 👍😎👍

Fossil ·

Came across this exploded parts view of a front seat - Items 6 & 7 are the seat adjuster cams

wombatventures ·

That's Cool Bert.
Looks like an early Lowback seat. Extra retaining screw for the Adjuster Knob, doesn't show roll pins holding the other end either. Seat back retainer has a different mechanism as well. What was the diagram in?

nils ·

Next batch of 10 pairs ordered and will be landing about the 20th of March,

Prices will be the same, if you are sitting on the fence about getting a some now is the time! register your interest at nilsbirkmann@hotmail.com or SMS me at O400 592 25O

Hi Nils, text sent.

Hi Terry,

Found this by chance - it's in a 88MB Body parts file for Type 3 I found - part numbers provided also. Lots of other sections also 🤪

If you want to download it (site not happy if you view on line and state download & save to view) I can send you the link via email or PM.

Screw on knob think you'll find is for a cover plate - chrome 😊

Cheers & beers
Bert

Heard this morning that all 10 seats have been spoken for 😎 now that didn't take long 👍

wombatventures ·

That means 19 Type 3s will have working seats soon!
Brilliant!
PM it to me Bert, Sounds good.

Fossil ·

Ok Terry, leave it with me 🙄

Fossil ·

I understand that the 3rd production run for these is being put together ....... interested then get in early as 2nd production run went in 36 hours.

wombatventures ·

3 hour drive to Adelaide Friday. 👍
3 hour drive home Sunday. 👍
Type 3 owners at Day of the Volkswagen 2! Us and a Square. told the young lad about the adjusters. He'll have to save up.
Notch ran brilliant for a change... amazing what a proper tune will do!

Fossil ·

Sunday last i drove 2 hrs to Toowoomba, 4 hrs @ Dubs on the HIll and then 2 hr drive home - Seat was so comfortable and the Fastback loved the long run @ highway cruising speed 👍

Notch looks good Terry 😎

wombatventures ·

I'll swap you for that drive Bert. Your roads are better along that stretch. Barrier Highway/ Main North Road from here to Adelaide is like ocean waves with wind chop added in! Now the motors running well and the seats are reclining, I think it's time I looked at the suspension and steering.
We drove the Notch home from Queensland back in 2014. Sunshine Coast to Toowoomba via Kilcoy, Somerset Dam, Esk, Ravensbourne. Fun drive, plenty of corners to make Bec Queasy!

nils ·

👍👍👍

Fossil ·

Seat Adjuster Cams still available - contact nils with your commitment to buy to get on the list for the next order 👍😎😁

Fossil ·

After the Dubs @ the Abbey a couple of weeks back these will fit up to and including 1972 Type3 seats - refer to above exploded view picture and IF unsure ask the question and post a picture of your seat to confirm as close as we possibly can.

Fossil ·

Type3 owners ..... these are still available and ordered when minimum quantity of 10 seats (sets/pairs) is received by Nils.

In the current edition #54 of VWMA there is an article on these on Page 32 👍

Fossil ·

Nils has posted another order is being put together in this thread https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=111806&page=2

Type 3 Owners, don't know what all the fuss is about with these then read the above thread and this one ..... you won't be sorry with fitting a new set of these to your seats.

wombatventures ·

As an early purchaser of these I'm happy to say they work brilliantly.
They take about an hour to fit, if you don't take 50 photos and spend 20 minutes working out how to get the seat out.
If anyone wants advice on how to fit them or to discuss them then shoot me a pm. I'm sure Bert will say the same.
After 3 years of having the seats set in one position its great to be able to adjust them to suit.

Fossil ·

Plenty of satisfied customers ....... anyone wanting a seat (1pair for 1 seat) should contact nils

Fossil ·

Ok so Photobucket has slammed a block on my pictures SO please use the ones Terry has posted for reference 👍

nils is still the contact for ordering these 😎

nils ·

Looking at doing a new run, anyone interested should get in contact soon.

Fossil ·

nils wrote:Looking at doing a new run, anyone interested should get in contact soon.
Bet they won't take long to be snapped up 😊

Fossil ·

Type 3 owners, these seat adjuster cams are still available....... front seat's won't adjust the recline then this is possibly what you need ??????

Fossil ·

Have tried to edit posts and put all the pictures (previously hosted on photobucket) BUT forum only allows 3 pictures per post so check out other pitures posted by Terry aka Wombaventures 👍😉

Fossil ·

Latest order has been placed and product received by nils 👍

Fossil ·

Hey Nils,
Bus914 is after 2 seats.- will PM you
Cheers & beers,
Bert

Fossil ·

Nils has informed me he has 4 seats/pairs from his last order still available so contact him via PM to confirm price and postage 👍

cheers & beers
Bert

nils ·

Thanks for fielding this Bert,

I have been crazy busy of late if anyone doesn't hear back from me straight away, please email me direct at,

nilsbirkmann@hotmail.com

so that it flashes up on my phone.

Fossil ·

Nils has 2 seats (pairs) available out of the last production run - give your Type 3 a Christmas Present and yourself a pair of seats that are easier to adjust and more comfortable 👍

nils ·

Will have the last 2 pairs with me at Boris' picnic if you want to get your hands on some 😀

Fossil ·

Been a few months 👍 time for a refresh😁

Fossil ·

Here's an update from nils (in this thread : https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=111806) -

Here we are again!

Another batch will be due to land on my desk in around 2 weeks, Can I please have a quick show of hands of any Aussieveedubbers that are after 1 or 2 pairs? I would hate for some of our long-standing supporters to miss out.

Names I do have are,

Kristof D - 2pair
JDYT3 - 2 pair
Rick W - 1 pair?
Tony R - 2 pair

If I have missed anyone or anyone should be removed from the list please let me know soon. We have 3 Pairs left unspoken for at the moment, but if we act soon we can still up the size of the order if required.

The cost for our US friends will remain the same at $USD75 a pair with a $30 postage to most areas.

While the failing Aussie dollar will mean we are up to $120AU on this side of the pond.

For those not wanting to read 7 pages to get the rundown, here is the Samba add again for the compressed version.

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2008828

Fossil ·

Time to give this advert a refresh as have received an enquiry and no doubt there are other Type 3 owners who have uncomfortable front seats and these seat cam adjusters (if suitable for your vintage - won't fit a 1973 I believe) will make the world of difference. 👍😁

Fossil ·

👍

Fossil ·

Woohoo all the pictures are back 👍
