I think the battery on my beetle has had it. Its 270cca but I read somewhere that beetles need 360cca...
What is the correct battery size/capacity?

360 seems a bit big! my truck only has a 360 in it which was recommended as a heavy duty battery when the old one died

I always buy 460cca Exide 12 volt batteries for beetles..
The bigger the battery the better- more plates more amperage.. better starting..
360cca would be OK though... I have a 360cca in My 2001 Lancer.. I always buy a good brand.. You do get what You pay for in Batteries....

Hi

Make sure you get a battery with sunken posts otherwise your back seat could catch fire, they are called DIN or Euro fitment. My battery book recomends a 430 cca for normal duty and a 520 cca for heavy duty. The 430 cca is 200 mm long, 172 mm wide & 176 mm high. The 520 cca is the same height & width only its 234 mm long. The 520 cca battery is used in Golf deisels.

if you do end up getting a battery from KFart, you'll have to get some thick rubber to go over the top of the battery terminals so they don't short out on the springs of the rear seat... sunken battery terminals type battery are kinda hard to find now a days aren't they?

European batteries with sunken terminals usually have to be specially ordered. I opted out and bought an exide 460cca battery with normal posts, and I am going to put the battery inside a battery box, & also cover the box with a piece of rubber.
Many years ago I used an old truck mud flap for protection. The main problem being someone putting all their weight on the rear seat with their knees or feet will push the seat springs onto the terminals with dire results.... The metal seat springs melt , along with the seat & eventually all the car if You don't carry a fire extinguisher... and make sure the fire extinuisher isn't in the dicky seat as You won't be able to get it out... A large piece of rubber will do the trick..... as european batteries are much more expensive than normal batteries... Don't use batteries made for ford cars as their terminals are longer again.... unless You want to cut the excess off.... Lee

Thanks guys :thumb

Hmm, when I got my beetle it came with a plastic cover that goes over the top of the battery and terminals with notches in the sides where the battery leads come out...
So I dont think i will have the spring shorting problem.

Maybe that is why so many VW Beetle owners take the back seat out and put speakers etc there instead.....

Hi

The sunken post batteries are used in all late VWs so they should be easy to get. The only trouble with covering your battery is that the battery needs to vent gases, also make sure its secured, the correct batteries use a ledge on the bottom.
