I have a 72 S Bug
i have a fair bit of movement in my steering column - like the is a bush or something missing at the top.
side to side or up and down
i got a little thin plastic bush from a shop but that did not fix the problem.
Am i missing a bush or something?
regards
Do you mean if you sit in the car you can move the steering wheel left to right and up and down or the whole column moves left and etc. As there should be a bracket under the dash with slots in it holding the column in place, and the steering wheel should be on a spline.:o

Check out the coloum holding bolts first under the dash make sure these are tight.
Remove the horn ring and steering wheel to check out the top bearing It should only moove minimal.
its the column within its tube
is it easily removeable - thereby why its missing
dont ever remember seeing it since i got the car
im assuming it fits over the splineand slide down the column into place.
When u asked me earlier i thought you were talking about a bit too much side to side play in the box, with the wheels straight ahead.
no bearing?

crazy man
on the colapsable steering models there is a bearing at the botom of the column outer on the bottom (above the colapsable part) when this is stuffed it give the whole column a loose feeling. I've been told by my local VW supplier that the bearing isnt available (not so sure I believe him tho) anyhow i turned up a slightly tapered nylon bush to replace it- this solve my loose column problem- cost me $2 and will stop any crud getting in!
Hi
I still not sure what you mean by the play, if you can pull the wheel towards you and push it backin, its the universal on the shaft and if its up & down & side to side your bearing is stuffed.
#28 on this picture is universal shaft;
#1a in this picture is where the bearing is, just remove the stering wheel, wiper & blinker switch to get to it.

If the bearings not available, it may be easier to get a whole new assembly (alum casting part) from the wreckers and do a swap.
The bearing looks like a push bike head set bearings, so I wonder if you can source them there?

i am no bug guy but i know on the kombi if you forget the spring under the wheel it will give lots of L-R slop in the column as it holds the pressure on the bearing
replaced the bearing at the top of the column
Had to remove the wheel, indicator/wiper switch housing (which promptly dissasembled itself in my hands
tiny springs went every where DOH
any way replaced the bearing and "sheesa beudy mate!!"
still got a problem with a worn out steering box though
regards and thanks

Before you look at your steering box, check No 28 above usually will go first. By holding the sterring wheel and turning it left and right you will hear a knocking loose sort of sound. they are not to bad to check if you have patience, but of course you own a VW. Universal Joint Steering Shaft. Tank out- Remove M8 nut at top of shaft- pull steering colum up as far as poss-remove bottom bolt completly-use screwdriver to part but watchplastic protector. Once out if you grab both end and turn in opposite direction there shound be NO movement...

thanks for the advice.
what i experiencing now is tight sections an loose spots when turning the wheel
Sounds like the same problem I had in my truck, which was caused by wear in the worm inside the steering box.
Kruizin Kol
Under spare wheel, left side, undo nut, take up slack with car on jack moving steering from left to right making sure its not to tight, if done, then new box needed.
