I want to get rid of my PDSIT or whatever the twin Solexes on my bus are called
They dont like me and i dont like them
Fuel economy round town is woeful to say the least

By the way it is a 1982 Suth Efrican CU 2L auto

I can either make up some shortie manifolds and put some IDF36's on there or another dubber has just offered me a fuel injection set up

What are the pro's and cons of each system

I am resigned to the fact the bus aint no speed demon and it is my wifes daily driver.
Ecomomy is more what i am after

At present i am getting 6km/L in work/shops/school/gym trips. It does lots of km's (about 2-300 km's per week) but they are all short trips. On a holiday to central NSW we got around 8km/L average

At present it drives VERY smooth

The only thing i dont like is it doesnt idle well in the morning for a minute or 2.
You have to rev it - yeah like the chokes aint working.
My Webers in Blue settle quicker
This just proves to be a problem as it is an auto. Cant really give it a bootful when you are trying to come out of the park in the morning.

Lea is always running late (hope she doesnt read this 🙁 ) so telling her to sit there for 2 mins aint an option

By the way - i have pulled the air filter when cold and both butterflies were closed. After you drive it, say to the shops in the morning it then idles fine. I solved a leak in the air shut off solenoid (the one to the front of the LHS carb) and it now idles up and down when under load. ie you put in park and it picks up to say 1100 revs as it should.

Thanks

Barry

Barry, go the injection (and I'm not saying this cause I'm selling mine!!)

I just sold my squareback, which I installed a TLE engine (the factory Type 3 fuel injected engine), got rid of the factory computer and fitted a microtech MT4 computer.
All I'm going to say is, It never missed a beat and never left me stranded ever!!
Just buy yourself a VL fuel pump, some fuel line, clamps, filters and your sweet.

too be honest with you Barry, my ex-squareback had 6volt motor in it when i 1st got it, and I pulled that motor pretty much straigh away, so I can't give you economy comparisions, plus where talking about 2 different types of cars as well as engines.
I'ld assume that the economy with the injection, will be better if not the same as with carbs. The main difference is that it will be smoother, and easier to start in all weather conditions, plus you wont have to ever worry about trying to sync the carbies!!!🙂

yep, go with fuel injection, it's much more precise and the main benifits of that are likely to be improved economy and better cold starting.

is this for a type 2 bus?
i havn't got my head round Km/L yet, i still work in Mpg, but what i do know is that a van will never be very good on fuel, especially round town 🙁 something to do with the weight and having the aerodynamics of a house brick..... plus, its an auto, this also tends to reduce economy somewhat... any idea what 6km/L and 8Km/L is in mpg? i wouldn't expect a van to do any better than 20mpg rond town, this is from personal experience and that of friends of mine.

Hi Barry

Fuel consumption is usually expressed in litres per 100ks. Go the factory EFI, they were always very reliable, they would sometimes have backfires and destroy the L flap in the air flow meter and blow hoses off.

One question
If i go Webers i would have to fabricate a new linkage system / throttle cable thingy. The "cable" clamp for the Solexes is a lot further back and as it is an auto it is the solid rod set up.

If i go fuel injection can i use the stock rod??

Would be a lot easier if i can.

6km/l = 16.6 L/100km = 17 mpg
8km/L = 12.5 /100km = 22.5 mpg

I hate that L/100 km
it is juice you put in it should be measured against that

I dont know about the "stock rod" that your talking about, but the injection has a single butterfly, so I'ld assume that the cable would connect straight to the throttle body....hope this helps clear a bit of the confusion. Otherwise have a chat to Richard about how it all connects, as I've never owned a kombi

i don't think you've really got much to gain on the fuel economy, those figures basically match the kind of figures i've seen before, the 2ltr engine was never great on economy....
but injection will still solve your cold start problems, and there is a chance you would get slightly improved economy...

good luck 🙂

Can some one tell me if there is a difference between an injector or throttle body for an automatic as opposed to a manual

I heard thet one yesterday

Dino
the auto has a rod not a cable. Might need to think long and hard on this. The webers hex bar is an easy (Ha!) mod to get it to work.
Not so sure on the other.

Do you know if your T4 was an auto motor or a manual motor??

The only difference I can think of between a manual and an auto is the possible need for a kick-down linkage. I can't see that either the throttle body nor the injectors would need to be different....

I'm pretty sure that it was an Auto.

Quick question, on the 2 litre engine where the case bolts onto the gearbox I think its on the left side at the top, there is a hole about 1.5-2 inches in diameter, where these holes only on the auto's or on manuals as well? I'm pretty sure that only the autos had this hole, Dont ask me what its for though.....
