I personally prefer to do the bus and beetle at 5000 k's.

It is not just the k's though, I do the EH every year even if it has only done 1500 k's. Oil breaks down a certain amount over a year through the seasons.

Beetle's don't forget to clean your oil strainer and Kombies, get a good quality oil filter. The German ones with the nut on the bottom make for very easy removal come next oil change.

I also use only the same brand of oil all of the time. Not purely for brand loyalty, but it eliminates the chance of cross contamination between different chemicals in different brand reacting.

No point mentioning the brand as a brand war may ensue. But I do buy in 20 Litre drums to be able to do all 5 of our vehicles (including motorbikes). 😀
