Why dont you try and reverse the guilt thing & make them feel guilty for NOT letting you go and enjoy life while you are young!

I'm not sure I understand EXACTLY why they don't want you to go though so I can't be much more help. I don't buy the whole "we don't want you in a VW for that long" thing - unless they both have veedubbaphobia.. Hmmm.

try the reverse guilt trip

Tell them your
a drug dealer
a former child prostitute
a commodore driver
a shop lifter
your "other" boy friend works in a glue factory
etc etc

Once they have come too, tell...." nah - just kidding"
THEN
ask if you can go??

ok, so the problem is they don't want you going all that way (or should it be all the way) in a volkswagen.

WELL I have the solution.

Tell them that since they won't let you go with nick in the VW then you've decided to come with me on the back of my motorbike, we could do 180 the whole way and then it would be a short trip. It'll be much much safer.

Trust me, they'll want you to go in the VW in no time 😉

Find a friend who owns a commodore or something like that, tell your parents you are going with them.
Set the date 1 day early and stay at your friends that night and get nick to pick you up from there place the next morning.

First show them how expensive it is to fly to Coffs. Then you can tell them how bored you will be sitting at home, you'll probably turn to drugs. Then you will be forced into prostitution to feed the habit. You will get pregnant and the baby will be affected by the drug use. Of course, a junkie will have a lot of trouble bringing up a kid like that, so custody will no doubt be handed over to them. Wave goodbye to a peaceful retirement.

Dont let them watch TV to see the accidents on the Princes/Pacific Highways.

You could catch the train. Its a drag but you can do it. OR get your parents to see you off on the train while nick waits at the next station along......

im making an effort to tell them about (nonchalantly of course) all the work im doing on the baja before the trip. like i have re wired the engine bay am adjusting brakes today and should bleed them on the weekend, new fuel lines, i have a fire extinguisher, rebuilt carbie, full tune on engine etc. im hoping that they will think better of the car. ......the problem is her father is a mechanic and knows what VW's are like.

Oh? What are VW's like? I've been driving mine for 10 years and never had a major problem. Sure, I've had lots of close calls, but most of them were though my own negligence or carelessness.

If VW's are such a safety hazard, they wouldn't be allowed on the road. The fact is, they are subject to the same safety standards as any other vehicle of equivalent age.

i think i need new brake linings pretty soon. had to lock up the brakes yesterday in a bit of defensive driving. some clown pulled out into an 80 zone with oncoming traffic. (me at the head of it in the baja) and decided to do 10kms/h for about 15 metres so he could go around the corner to his driveway. scared the shit out of me...i would have gone around him but there was an oncoming car so i braked and ended up sliding the last metre to a stop about half a metre from his rear bumper as he was entering his driveway. His mate that was waiting there just looked at me spaceily while i started the engine and drove round the corner to inspect my tires. so my brakes do work. however i would feel safer knowing i could brake in the same distance i can brake for instance in Eirinns magna. not that im saying i prefer the magna in fact i dont like driving it but the brakes are great. how much is a booster?

yeah! 62's rock! I know that when mine breaks down it's usually something simple (like just now up the road, it's something electrical) and can be fixed pretty easily. I remember trying to fix my mum's old subaru, it was a mess!
