How did the RHD split beetles get sold in Australia?

Did VW import them, were they all private imports or was their an agent that imported them?

I had heard that VW didn't import directly until the oval was released and then wondered how they got here before that.

Split Beetles were all private imports,
Although I did read somewhere that VW did import 2 Splits here for something, and John Laws used to own one of them???
