I'm new to this forum so just a hello to all the members out there.
I'm investigating getting a beetle. but would like some more info on irs vs swingaxle. it seams all the bugs i like the look of have a swing axle but i think i'd prefer irs.
Does anyone have any real world stories of the differences on the road?

Well I don't know enough,
Maybe try this in the tech section, I always get good answers from the experts there.

cheers for that.
I reposted in the tech section.
In normal everyday driving you wont notice any differences at all. Should feel the same. If you're going to go mental then you may run into problems. The outside tyre can tuck under and tip you over. Having said that, a swinger can be made to handle pretty well, but if you're gonna spend money on that, start off with IRS and spend from there.
Also, if you plan to lower it then the back wheels will look broken, and angle in at the top. I hate the look.
Better off looking for a body that doesnt need major therapy. Thats the hardest, most expensive thing. Later on, you can swap floorpans or convert to IRS.
... They are actually both IRS. IRS swing axle, and IRS double joint axle. Why the latter is commonly just called IRS I dont know.

get a superbug.......they have pretty good brakes (front discs) they have IRS,handle smoother than a beam front end beetle (macpherson strut front end), have a pretty large engine (1600 twin port) and go pretty hard (u can do 110ks). but be warned it will drain your money having a volksie but u will love it!....happy dubbing.

Cheers for the replies guys.
Robo. I'm 23 and plan on spending (all up and over time) around the 20 grand mark. this is taking place of a rotary drag car project.
I've had a couple of alfa romeo 33's so i doubt vw's would give me more drama's then those 🙂
I have been drooling over cal-look beetles and am going to go that route i think.
A superbug has a rounded windscreen? and L's bugs of the same vintage have flat screens? this has been the only way i've been able to differ between the two from outside the car.
Dom.
other way around mate sbug has flat and metal dash lbug has curved and padded dash

what about windscreens? thats what i was referring to.

sorry i abreviated, i meant flat windscreen and curved windscreen, i do that some times.
so 71-2 sbug has flat windscreen and 73-76 lbug has curved.
btw the lbug box is stronger

u also cant lower an L bug front end as low as you can get a 71-72 super because of the differerent struts. in case u were interesting in that.........however if u want a cal looker then id buy an early 60s bug and forget about a super they are too modern. just dont try to go round corners at 60Mph. or u will roll.

It's just going to be a cruiser. I'm over driving fast as i simply can't afford it.
So all of the 60's bugs were swing axle?
these have head lights that sort of just sit in the guard without the bumps raising them up ?
so a superbug is basically all the good hardware in the more rounded modern body?
would a 60s body fit on a sbug pan?
it will but you then run in to the problem of the lack of strut towers in the 60s body if you want to go with an early body you need a Lbug pan cause of the beam front end in after 73 cars

I just brought a sbug for 2and a half g and it is smiko its a 72 and cruises well at 100 klicks. This is my first bug and realy happy with it.
my old sbug would cruise at 110km between sydney and taree easily, but it was modified. it had a 2L kombi motor in it. god i miss it but it will be back.

Hi
If you like the Cal look, have a look at the German Look, ideal for supers

Hey spoon33,4yrs and a cuppla mths i was in your position too, sounds like you like the early beetles so its a 67 or earlier and there all swing axle,so get one, later when you decide swings suck then look for a semi auto pan,you get a ball joint beam and a double jointed irs on the rear, thats what im doing now, luck dude, and get one with the least amount of rust but being an alfa guy you know that already hey 🙂
1302steve. spot on the monkey i do prefer the german look.
lugnuts do u have any pics of ur creation?
