Josh Dowling dream garage:
Lambo Galardo
Porsche 911 Turbo Awesome all-wheel-drive performance without the ostentatious looks of the Lamborghini.
BMW X5 4.4 V8 Perfect, practical, go-anywhere car. I prefer the 4.4, the 4.8 is too highly strung.
Audi RS6 Porsche performance in a wagon. F1's Schumacher brothers (who each own one) can't be wrong.
HSV Maloo R8 Where street-cred, performance, cargo-carrying capacity and larrikinism combine.
Audi S3 Pocket rocket with a dose of prestige. Good for tight parking spaces and reasonably discreet.
Subaru WRX Yes, the regular Rex. The STi has too many compromises for its modest performance gain.
Mitsubishi Lancer Evo Better than the equivalent Subaru but I'd only drive it somewhere I'm unlikely to be car-jacked.
Audi A8 Awesome presence, style and quality. I'd option the superb 19-inch wheels.
Ford Falcon Typhoon The high-performance turbo Falcon is not released yet but should be a bullet.

Porsche 911RS, 1973 The road-going version of one of Porsche's most successful racing models. An unadorned classic.
Volkswagen Golf 2.0-litre TDi DSG The cool thing for town and remarkably good in the country. Astounding economy from one of the best diesel engines in the business. Great twin-clutch, two-pedal gearbox.
Audi S3 There's a new one imminent but I like the old one; the quintessential pocket-rocket, with all-wheel drive and a turbocharged four.
Toyota Prado diesel Just for going into the outback. More kilometres to the tank with the diesel.
Lamborghini Murcielago Stunning appearance and performance, incredible sound, gloriously impractical.
Subaru Liberty 3.0R-B wagon Flat-six engine, six-speed gearbox and one of the best-sorted performance cars around.
Audi A8 A bit of plush is needed from time to time; the A8 delivers in spades.
VW Kombi Campervan An alternative to speed, with a comfy bed and a compact kitchen. Don't ask me why.
McLaren F1 A modern classic, beautifully engineered with technology that wasn't allowed on racing cars.

Porsche 911 Turbo Power and the glory, all-wheel-drive grip, reliable, driver-friendly.
Lamborghini Gallardo Brilliant and brutal beneath that sexy traffic-stopper shape.
BMW M3 Practical high-performance, growling straight-six motor. Give me the manual box please.
Ferrari 360 Modena No better sound, sizzling performance, lovely shape. Modena magic.
Maserati Quattroporte Glorious, sonorous V8 in a stunning, sensuous body. Sumptuous cabin.
Pagani Zonda Howling 7.3 V12, kick-a** performance ... for a lazy $1.4 million.
McLaren F1 Most outrageous production car ever, with room for two friends.
Audi A8 Teutonic luxury, Quattro safety, classy V8 bundled into a dazzling, aggressive aluminium overcoat.
Lotus Exige A kart with a roof and bumpers. Affordable fun for the race track.

BMW X5 3.0 turbo diesel In Drive's tests our only five-star four-wheel drive. Nothing else comes close at present. Oil take it.
Porsche Boxster S Difficult to decide between this and the BMW M3. Better balanced than the 911, but it has got enough performance and absolutely perfect poise.
Ducati 750 SS The legendary 1974 Green Frame model. A priceless motorbike and it would look peachy next to my 1975 750 GT.
Holden Monaro CV8 Holden designer Mike Simcoe's masterpiece from 2001. A beautiful rendition of the Australian muscle car.
Audi A8 The new leader of the uber limo pack. I'd take it up to the Northern Territory where it's allowed to do what it's supposed to do.
Ford Falcon GT-HO The XY Phase III model from 1970-1972. A BA XR6 turbo would also be nice, but the shed's full.
Harley-Davidson Road King The ultimate cruising bike. Perth and back, easy and I could listen to the cricket on the radio, or some suitable R&B tunes. Well, I remember when I was young ...
Mercedes-Benz 300SL Turns 50 this year. Anyone got a few spare million?
VW Kombi The split-screen model from the 1960s, with a factory camper conversion and a peace symbol on the back. Every old hippie should have one
