Oh man, not another one! Our poor volksies. They sure do a good job of living up to their reputations.
Keep yer fire extinguishers handy folks!🙁
Yep heed the warning folks it does happen all too often.
I just picked up a type 3 wagon, fuel lines was the first thing I checked and sure enough BOTH brass tubes where the fuel enters the carbs had fuel dripping out!!!! Bump the fuel hose and they just fell out.
Very scary!

extinguishers on sale at super cheap, two for $40 at the moment 🙂
Don't think about it, just buy an extinguisher - I have seen too many perfectly good VW's wrecked because of engine fires....nearly lost my Grandmothers one owner, private import '68 Beetle to fire - just my brothers quick thinking that saved it.
Hope that it was no one here in the twin cab, and I also hope that the damage was not too bad 🙁

Sad to hear but reminds me of a funny (sad) story.. Way back when..
I had met my girlfriend (16) and we decided the best vehicle for her first car would be a bug.. Found the right one (yellow 60 something 1200) and named her Daisy.. Daisy was washed every weekend and loved and adored.. One fine Saturday morning we decided to take a drive in Daisy out to the Hunua Falls (Akl, NZ) which is a round 60k trip.. On the way, I stopped and filled the tank, checked the oil and left the oil rag tucked down the side of the engine cavity.. Anycase we made it to the falls (down a fairly steep incline) although I remember Daisy was misfiring a bit..
Anycase, on the way back up the incline my brother (Dave, 12 yo) in the back yelled out that he smelt smoke.. Sure enough, when I pulled over the back of the car was in flames.. Out we jumped and ran a way off while we watched Daisy burn (rural area, no help).. Then Debbie (my gf) screamed that she had left Buffy (poodle) in the back.. I raced back (very macho) and rescued Buffy from the back of the flaming bug.. Just as I was grabbing the dog, Daisy decided to turn over!!! I kid you not, fair shit myself.. Somehow the melting HT leads had shorted and had sent battery power to the starter motor!..
Anycase, ran with dog and stopped a fair way off and watched Daisy go through her "starter motor" death throes.. Very painful to watch.. Lump in throat stuff..
Now (26 years) later, I am married to Debbie, Daisy was replaced with a 1300 Bug (Cal look) named Ruby (first of many) Buffy died of insulin overdose, Dave lives in JKT and nearly bought it in the Sari Club bombing and I make sure I carry a fire extinguisher and a clean set of undies!!
PS: The reason why it caught fire, we believe, was the oil rag came loose and wrapped around the fuel line and belt and ripped the fuel line out..
That is another "moral of the story".. Never leave any stuff in the engine bay.. no matter how insignificant..
