i went looking at sum beetles today for ma grand dad and thier was a 1973 L bug but the spare tyre was laying down in da bonnet and the fuel tank was more up. also it had a padded dash. does this sound right.

its just mi grandad had a 1974 and the dash was metal not paded i would of thought that if they invented the padded dash in 1973 they would of kept it goin until 1976 and not stop in 1974

You are correct about the differences between an "L" or 1303S Beetle .. and a standard Beetle....
The 1303S or "L" was Sold in Australia in 73-74-75 then came the Best Beetle made - IMHO - The 1976-77 Beetle..
It had a flat windscreen and upright spare tyre.. and a genuine flat dashboard although it was covered with black plastic... Many people took the plastic covering off in later years as they did tend to crack in Australia's hot summers...
So a modern Beetle in 1975 or a NON Modern Beetle in 76...
It makes Me wonder too.. I believe that as both Beetle bodies were still being made in Germany at the time, and the L Beetles were NOT as Popular as the old style Beetles, so they switched back to the old original flat windscreened Beetle... but it was too late.,.,.
in the US.. the 1303S Beetle went until 1977 and then the Karmann 1303S Cabriolet convertible went until 1979....
The "L" or 1303S was Never made in Mexico, Brazil or South Africa...
In Europe the old 1200 Beetle was sold alongside the "L" Beetle...

infact i bought it last night 🙂 i still prefer the old dash but it looks more modern. so did th padded dash only come wit l bugs

The "L" Beetle [had a 1303S Badge elsewhere] had the 'modern' dash in 73-74-75 then the flat dash & flat windscreen Beetle came along in 76-77... these flat dashes did have a black plastic cover over the painted dash...
Many people took them off as they liked the painted early look dash.... but You will see the odd plastic coated dashed beetle at VW shows...
Enjoy Your New 1303S or "L" Beetle....
It will have elephants feet tail lamps... !!
and some people will say its now got a proper dash....
