maybe if you take them to a lock place and see if they can change the interior lock tumbler thingy to a more modern one that actually works. i know what your talking about nick mines that same, i don't know how many times i've used a paddlepop stick to open my door and once i used my thumbnail!
THe MC Bat Commander's motto: "Never do now, what you could do for 24 hours straight, all night, the night before."
I assume you mean your doors pop open on bumps etc? Mine used to do that.. There was one bump in the road on the way to Canberra (Federal Highway) where my Oval door used to pop open to teh first 'stop'. I could drive all round the state and not have the door pop once, except for this ONE FRIGGIN BUMP! You can buy brand-new striker plates and latch mechanisms from VVDS, I think (Dave will know...) that may fix the problem.
An alternative is to do a door swap - late model doors will bolt on to teh shell, but you will need to 'cut and shut' the section of B-pillar where the striker plate is mounted. You will then have big window doors and small rear side windows...
OR you could use late Mexican doors (if you can find them at soem importers... Dave?). They have the early-style small windows, but use the later-model burst-proof 'safety' door mechanisms. I am considering this for my Oval. But, for a low-budget build, it's easier to do a shell swap, really...
my doors dont pop open im just talking about the lack of security of my car........you could open it with a key from any car or a stick .......or a nail file......or a pocket knife....or a.......you get the point.

Nick,
I don't know if it's legal in Oz but if it is why not shave the door handles off altogether and install solenoid on the drivers side via a relay to a hidden reed switch. I did this to my beetle in England and the only trouble I ever had was when it snowed the door froze shut and there was no handle to pull it open. Shouldn't need to worry about that here though.

if you just get the internals refreshed you should be right. my other car is a Ford Laser, i have 2 mates who own lasers 2 years older then mine, one mates i can open with my keys after a bit of jiggling, but the other one i dont even have to jiggle, whats worse is that i can then slide my key into his ignition and drive his car away no problems. my laser on the other hand got a set of new (original) locks 6 or so years back after it was stolen and as a result nobody can get into mine the way i can get into theirs. get a locksmith to rebuild your locks and you wont have a problem.
