Ages ago, I mucked about with my registry. I did back it up, but who knows where that disk is now. Anyhow my problem is, that I lost an important doohicky.
What do you call the thingo in bottom right which monitors your internet stuff. Its an icon (two puter screens) that flash when you have bits n bytes coming n going. And what I need it for, right click, disconnect.
My internet connection has 4 hour limit and its frustrating when I am in the middle of an online euchre tourney and I have to wait until the computer realises the connection has dropped out, which can be a minute or so. A minute is a long time when your about to get a loner.
So how can I get it back. Its win2K.

if u just want to be able to disconnect..pull the cable out of the wall
If the icon never appears maybe there is a place to turn it on..prolly a tickbox in the connections properties
yes, internet options->connections->settings->properties has a check box for show icon, which is checked, but the icon isnt there.

uncheck it restart ur pc then check it and it should work
BTW what windows u running if its 2000 or XP u can go back to ur last known good configuration 🙂
Costa, you get an A for effort, but F for achievement.
It didnt come up with 2 restarts. I looked at the restore registry thing in help and it says that when I click shutdown restart I will get an option to choose operating system, press f8 for restore last known registry. I only have one OS and didnt get a chance to hit f8 though.
Thanks for trying.

dump dial up and get broadband!..problem solved
or you could perform my favorite past time..formatting 🙂
I dont know how the registry could kill icons????
Try making a new connection (same as the old ) and see if that works
what os u running?
That will learn ya for mucking with stuff ya don't understand!!! :P
There's probably an easier way to fix it, but the easiest one I know of is to reinstal windows after a reformat. :puke
The upside is, at least you didn't fry your heads!!! :P
Kruizin Kol
Broadband would be better... and cheaper for me as well as I have a 2nd phone line. If I was going to be sticking around in this house I would get it. However when/if I ever get another job, the first paycheque will be spent advertising the house for sale.
Its 2000 Professional. Find all the necessary drivers for me and I will use XP 64bit.
I phuckked with the registry to try and get it to boot up quicker. Took out a lot of references to things I didnt recognise. So I am guessing that I removed some monitoring things.
Gday Kol. Hows this for a summer project? Do I take the big heads off my fastback engine and go turbo in the kombi again? Something to think about after the BBQ shelter that I have been building for 4 years is finished.
What I am about to do is "add windows components".. management and monitoring tools. It has a little network icon next to it. Wont do anything but slow the system down I bet.
*crosses fingers*

AAAAAAAaaaaaaahahahaha you idiot - don't play with the registry unless you know what you are doing or if your happy to re-install the OS...
To configure the connection setting via the registry, navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\{GUID of Adapter}\Connection
To change the status of the Taskbar icon, set the ShowIcon value name, a REG_DWORD data type, to:
0 - The icon is NOT displayed when connected.
1 - The icon is displayed when connected.
These settings will become effective on the next restart.
...and you should only need one restart ... good luck

Is that all of your options ???
hmmm try this
I am assuming you are fairly competant with the Windows environment ... so hit Run then type in mmc (Microsoft Management Console)
Management Console/Services and Applications/Services/ right click on Network Connections: ensure that the start up is automatic and under the Log on tab check the tick box next to 'Allow service to interact with desktop'.
hmmmm does this work ?!?!?! bit of a stab 😉
