Does anyone know how to find out if your car was Australian built or imported based on the chassis number (or anything else)?

Also when did they switch to metric speedo's on Australian built dubs?

Cheers

Any bug pre 64 was mostly imported,
Hood release on the left, aswell as fuel filler in some models.
Aussie bugs had release on the right with filler.
A good trick is to look on the back of the speedo as it is stamped with build month and year.
As is the fuel gauge. If they have'nt been replaced.
After 65 ( i think it was 65) the third number in the floorpan code refers to year build.
Aussie dubs had an extra plate rivetted to the body for oz compliancy aswell.

Aussie dubs were only assembled between 65 and 67 in melbourne.
If someone can correct me ,go ahead as my memory is getting a bit rusty.

speedos began hanging from miles to KM late 1973 or thereabouts, I had a '73 bus for spares with MPH

I should point out that it was not a matter of when this make or that changed over from miles to Km, it was a compliance requirement for all new cars sold in Aust from a certain date

My 65 has little VW emblems with kangaroos on the far left and right sides of the dash right up near the doors, thats how I know mines aussie.
not sure if they put them all aussie built bugs or what, but have a look anyway.
Ill try and get a more desriptive location for ya tomorrow.

The easiest way to tell, is look at the glass, Armafloat glass is Aussie glass, Sekurit glass is German.

Beetles were manufactured here from '61 and assembled from ckd kits from '56.
