I just need to have a rant/vent as murhys law went into overdrive yesterday.
I just completed restoring my 67 bug, 14 months of bloody hard work and a sizable lump of cash went into it. Anyhow, after finally getting a roadworthy i had it booked into vicroads for an inspection yesterday morning as it was previously enreg.
I had it to pick the morning when even for us in Melb. the weather was extraordinarily sh@tty. But as Id taken the day off work I thought i would still drive the pride and joy to the vicroads office as it was only 3 klms away.
On the way there I was almost T boned by a mentally defective cabbie doing a u turn from a side street, I was in the right lane of a main road?. The only way to avoid this @ucker was to swerve into the oncoming lane ( no traffic at the time thank @uck) . After describing his mothers nocturnal activities in great detail I continued my journey to Vicroads.
Everything at vic roads was sweet, got my plates and was heading home in the monsoonal rain when I heard a rumbling noise from the left rear. I was on a main road with no where to pull off ( whatever that road is that goes past the zoo), The noise got progressively worse so I had no choice but to stop in the left lane. The left rear wheel nuts were working themselves loose!. I couldnt believe that after doing an anally retentive full resto I forgot to tighten the nuts up! To make matters worse I didnt have my jack or brace.
Anyhow, after waiting in the rain for the racv for about 20 min, and having about 3 trucks almost take out my rear end the boys in blue arrived.
These lads were bloody great, the guy incharge fully sympathised as his dad was into vw's. they stood there in the rain directing traffic while one bloke gave me have a hand, borrowed his cars jack & brace and quickly got things sorted.
Finally got home about 10 min later and felt almost 10 years older.
Big thanks to the boys in blue, even if they are a bit trigger happy theyre by far the best coppers in Oz in my book.

Cheers, Chris

Cant fault the vicroads guy , he was pretty thorough and there would be no reason to check the tightness of a wheels nuts unless it was obviously loose and at the time it seemed ok. I guess he would assume I wasnt that dumb, proved him wrong :P,
didnt realise not having a jack/brace was a roadworthy offence?, or is that in nsw?
my bugs never going out in the rain again though.

yay for the coppers, grrrrrr for the cabbie.
you should have gotten his number plate and told the cops about it... your good deed to victorias other drivers for the day.
in the beginning, the universe was created.
this made alot of people very angry and is widely regarded as a bad move.

I can fully sympathise we that I had a similar thing happen after I took my beetle to get the wheels balanced, the guy loosened the bolts (on mag wheels) but his boss said that they wouldn't fit on his balancer -they were a bit on the wide side and on driving the car home in London traffic the car was all over the road, I stopped and ducked under the front as the steering felt up the shoot but as I looked backwards I could see one of the back wheels at about 45o angle! It was hanging on the drum by the hole in the centre of the wheel. After removing one bolt from each of the other wheels (3 bolts then in each) I retraced my steps and found the lost bolts then returned to the wheel shop and expressed my opinion of his work>

just got the car going one day, took it for a spin in the paddock, hear clonking, pull up, left hand back wheel kept going past. i had only hand tightened that wheel, and the nuts spun themselves off. lucky it wasn't on the road!!

pull up a chair...

I was going to get my bug regoed at Vicroads at about 1030am, but i had to get my new tyres from a tyre shop (whre else?!) The rep told me that my rubber would arrive with the first courier that morning at 9am. Being the trusting person that I am, I said "no worries" - that should be plenty of time to make it to Vicroads. But i waited and waited and waited until it was nearly time for my rego appointment, and my tyres still hadn't turned up. I had to ring Vicroads to move me to a later time and explained the situation. Lucky for me it was cool. So the rubber arrived later still, and I still had to rush to get to Vicroads.... got there just in time, but then the inspector starts to look hesitant at my new rear tyres as they stuck out past my rear guards by nearly 1". I had previously had the same rims and same profile tyres on my previous early bug and they didn't really stick out from the guards. He knew I wasn't a speed ricer, be he still couldn't let me pass when my tyres were protruding. So to cut an arduoulsy long storey short: I drove home, rung a friend: not suitable spare rims. Rung a VW place, they had some split kombi rims. They were krusty as a dead dingo's donger (but still road worthy, just). picked them up in my gf's car. jacked up my car, put them on the rear. drove down my street, griiiiiind! offset was wrong. run back to my house to fetch the hydro jack. Swapped the front tyres to the back. Ran the jack back to the house. Drove as fast as i could the Vicroads b4 they closed. The same guy looked at my car from 10 meters away and passed it (grrrrr):cussing Got home, jacked the car up again. Took the krusty kombi rims off the front axel, swapped my X-plies from the rear to the front, and replaced the fats on the back.... the next day, I returned the kombi rims I 'borrowed' along with a slab...

I'll shut up now... if this wasn't a post hijack, i dont know what is.. but you did ask!
