Just wondering if anyones bought themselves some safaris for their splitty lately & if they shopped around, where did they find the best price??

there was an original set on eBay for 500...they needed restoring though
The problem with originals is you are working with 50 year old steel that has rusted and been abused.
Go for a set of Creative Engineering safari's, they are made from ally and fit the standard glass, you can even interchange parts with original ones.
If you go on the Split Screen Van Club site, they state that Creatives are the best.
There are a couple of people here who have Creative Safari's, T2Saurkraut has them I think.
The Australian agent is ClassicVW (pacific).
I am starting to sound like an Infomercial for them????
I have a set of there pop-outs and after seeing the quality I would not use any others.
Cheers
Dave
If they sell them without glass how much extra do you think it would be to get the glass fitted??
If you get them from Classic they can supply them complete and if there is any problems you dont have to deal with anyone overseas as they are in Brisbane.
Tim, If they are anything like the pop-outs, I would have no problem recomending them at all, as they are brilliant quality and bolted straight in.
If in doubt ask Rob at Splitbus Australia as I know he always uses there stuff.
Cheers

I just buy the Creative frames and bits and get the glass
cut here. Worked out very reasonably price wise, about
$500-600 landed I think from memory. I'd buy the same
from ClassicVW (Pacific).
Be aware the glass from Creative doesn't meet ADRs. ADRs require 6.3XX something (3 laminations) laminated glass for windshields now. I just got a pair cut for $170 including
the approval stamp. Original safari glass won't get past
an engineer now either.
When I make these comments there is every possibility
that a roadworthy place would pass the car without checking
or knowing about ADR glass requirements. But if you're putting
a bus back on the road in Vic there's every chance VicRoads
might query it, or the seatbelts mounts or whatever and you'll
have to pay an engineer to certify these things - its best
to have em right from the git go....so I fit the current ADR
compliant 6mm laminated glass with approval etching. It won't go in with
a standard seal either (too thick) so I make seals from truck
inner tubes and trim em back..
The Creative safari frames are the best quality repro I have seen.......Wolfgang, Busboys etc don't have the inner frame strengthening
and are just U channel (ergo different non-standard glass
size too). From what I've seen in the US, you end up with lotsa
cracked windshields because of flex.....
Just my opinion of course.

yep i have ceative safaris but mine are the old steel ones that are chromed, the rest of my windows are the alloy style rear and side safaris as well as the pop outs they are awsome . i think that you can get stainless from wolfgang which would be really nice aswell.
but i am with 57 kombi on the classic vw thing although i bought all my gear direct from creative before classic vw were around shipping can be a real killer, personally i would get a complete kit with all rubbers and glass so you dont have to muck around finding and ordering different bits and pieces everywhere.
the price from the list i have in front of me is complete polished inc glass $1107
primmer $989.
thats to your door.
Thanks for all the good comments about us, it is much appreciated.
Everything has already pretty much been said.
Creative are an exact copy, double lining for strength etc.
The reason we bring them in without glass is that UK and Aus laws are totally different regarding windshield glass. I spent best part of a day ringing various departments to find out about relevant standards.
Not one department knew exactly what the rules are. I spoke to Qld transport who informed me that every VW on the road is illegal????
Anyway as its a grey area, O'Brien automotive will supply and fit (including gasket) Australian standard glass to Safaris.
There was also a post earlier this week regarding an Auto glazer on AVD

I was intending on buying them from here hopefully but when everyone talks price it seems to be alot more than what i've been quoted so i'm trying to work out which is cheapest. When Rob says it works out to be maybe $500-$600 landed to get them sent from Creative without the glass thats about half of what the price is here also without glass.
you might find rob either gets a good deal or buys with a lot of other things. i think mine were a bit more. also the creative kit comes complete with everything you need... you need rubers hinges duck nose. splinny thingo for the wipers. and i think the quality is top class. i am sorting something with roy also, i think better to deal with a local than imported. i had a minor issue with a wrong delivery of an item. roy took up my cause and has helped to resolve the issue, as he is now the local agent.
much appreciated.

I dont know where the $500-$600 comes from either, if thats creative. maybe I can get some off Rob😉

If you want to see them, our Tassie outlet "KdF werks" will be taking them to the Tassie show and Melbourne later this month.
maybe 5-600 pounds.... or usd
Ring George at Classic veedub. I'm sure when you talk to him you'll get a very attractive price.
The problem with the ones from Classic in Sydney are that they are from Wolfgang and are just u channel as Rob informed everyone above.
Creative are the only company making exact replicas

not actually true. i bought my priginal set from izzs safaris in the states. they are also made to the same spec as originals. ie 'v' channelled.
Simply Cruzin'...
I sit corrected.
I always thought that the creative ones were the only ones where you could take any part and interchange it with an original, as they have the inner frame strenghtening.
I do know that they come complete with everything you need to fit them.

Dave
We will have a set at DOVW, you're all welcome to inspect.......
KdF WERKS.
Go Mandie....Safari's are so cool!!!! :bounce:bounce:bounce
WOW....you're back with us!!! :kiss
Just checked my receipt. Cost of the primered
safari kit without glass and glass seal (for reasons above)
was $588 Aus. Add a proportion of freight and duty (bought
with other stuff) and the kit probably works out closer to $700 - $750.
However, I would really rather trade with a local business with 'fair'
margins than buy OS. I got a small order of Schofields stuff (mirrors external and internal, door pins etc) through Roy and was very happy. He got
them to me in a tightish time frame and was *very* fair with
his prices. I'll go back with my business - he has to make a living too and it will be good for all of us in the long run
if he can keep going the way he is.

ah. forgot you got primmered. i got polished.
Simply Cruzin'...
Tim.
I dont know where you got sides(pop-outs) for $500.
I think Roy is getting them for around $150 - $200.
