was a great day indeed....
my only feedbacks would probably to make categories a bit more specifics....as there is a lot more ovals appearing on the show scene (and am not saying that just cause i own one) some restored and some unrestored, i think there should be an oval category, and that goes for every shows everywhere.....and the same applies to kombis, i think there should be a dinstinction beetween microbuses, campers, panelvans.....or am i making it too difficult for the public to choose.....at least they will learn as they go the differences and be cultivated at the end of the show....
my 2 cents

I know what you are saying, but you have to understand that many people, even within the VW enthusiast community can't tell the difference between an early and a late beetle. We open this show to the general public too, many of which have never seen (or perhaps noticed) some of the less popular VW models (type III's, KG,s, type IV's, etc), so to make the catagories more specific would mean that these people would possibly have more trouble voting for their favourites in each class. This would cause them to consider it to be too hard (to quote Homer Simpson "...if you find that something is too hard, forget about it and find something easier to do"!) - have you been to Dubs by the Pub? They have dozens of catagories (and I don't think that this is a bad thing either), but it take ages to vote for them all. Last year I had many people come to me at DBTP and ask me questions like '...where are the vehicles in this catagory?'. In my own opinion, it took a lot more effort to vote (I didn't mind because I know the differences between the early and late cars and I have an idea what is standard and what is modified). I wonder how many people actually did enter their vote sheets (and then, how many of them were actually completed). I'll state this again - I'm not knocking the way the DBTP is run, its just done differently to our show.

You also have to look at how many of a particular type of car are going to attend a show - for the last 3 years (not including this year) we have only had one Karmann Ghia attend. This year we almost scrapped the KG catagory, but decided to give it one more go...we had 6 or 7 KG's show up this year! Likewise, I would love to split up the off road catagory and the factory watercooled catagory in some way...but how? (keeping in mind that it has to be easy for someone with little or no knowledge of these vehicles to pick the differences)....can you see what I mean?

On the other side of the coin, we (the organisers) have to count the votes from the different catagories in an amazingly short period of time, then we have to work out which vehicle from each catagory had the most votes - this year we recieved over 200 voting forms, each one had a vote for each of the catagories. As it was it took us longer than we expected to count the votes, to increase the number of catagories would just make the counting more time consuming and more prone to error.

Whilst I would love to further split down the catagories, we have decided that the way in which the catagories are currently set-up is a good balance between the catagories of vehicles represented and manageability (is that a word?).

Just so that you understand where I am coming from, it was also suggested that we should split each of the catagories into modified and non-modified (or original) - this too is only going to cause the same problems as listed above, plus a few more (ie: at what point does a car move to the modified catagory...non-standard parts? Mag wheels? Non-factory paint colour? Bigger than standard engine? - see what I mean?)

So I suppost what I am saying is that we could go a number of different ways with the catagories, however I feel that we have a good balance that everyone (well, OK, almost everyone) is comfortable with.

...Oh yeah, there is another side that only a few would see....if we added more catagories we would need more sponsors - this year almost half the catagories were sponsored by the Gold Coast Dub Club Inc (ie: there were no sponsors for these catagories so the club had to pay for the trophies), so adding more catagories would only increase the financial burden on the club.

The best part about a public judged show is that the public can choose their favourite vehicle...if you particularly like Ovals (and who doesn't!), then vote for an oval in the early beetle catagory. You don't have to justify you choice, it just has to be your favourite. In this way we not only see what is most likely to be the best cars in that catagory, but also what models most appeal to the participants, and wheather original or modified cars are the flavour of the month.

I hope you can understand the logic that we (the club) use when choosing catagories - at our first show we only had 'favourite Beetle', 'favourite Kombi', 'favourite Type III', etc. During the organisation of the next show, we had a vote to see if we would split the Beetle and Kombi classes into early and late...it was very close, but the decision was made to make the split (I might add that all the people that counted the votes at the first show voted against the split!). I doubt that there would be too many of the show organisers that would allow another vote to split the catagories again!

I hope all this makes sense.

If you have any further questions, please ask!

All I have to say is that it was a great day and thanks to GCVW for putting it on ...

Joke of the day goes to .......
Runner-up โ€“ Favourite Offroad Vehicle Purple 1984โ€™ Meyers Manx Owned by Gunta

I think you may need to change to name to Kit Car or something Best Offroad is a joke if you are going to award it to a car that sits about 5mm of the ground and scraps on speed humps.

...funny you should say that - Gunta himself made a similar comment during the photo shoot for the winning vehicles! If we are likely to get a similar number of vehicles next year we may have to split that group up as there was a vast and varied number of styles represented in that class, but for reasons listed above, we are hesitant to do so....

no need to split it just don't call it OFFROAD CLASS...

I don't see how you can have an OFFROAD SHOW CAR as the name of the class mentions some form of abuse and use in rugged conditions. Kurt impresses the hell out of me with his green buggy and the use it gets, yet it still stays clean and tidy ,,, I must stop hitting trees...
