as far as i know bugs were built in australia from around 58? and i had presumed that all other VWs were the same, but i found that my 67 panel that i have for sale at the moment (see classifieds section) is made in Germany (according to the ID plate). is this right/normal?

Most splits were made here from June 1954. These were called knock down kits as the panels were made in Germany and assembled here.
In 1960 body panels were made here at Clayton, it had the largest press in Australia to press the roof section.
This is why Australian splits have the vents above the swage line, due to dusty conditions over here.from 61
In early 1968 the operating stopped and it reverted back to kock down kits,
It has been documented that 55,000 splits rolled off the production line
Early splits have a badge near the rear engine lid lock that states "Made In West Germany"
This is because they were knock down kits, meaning the panels were made in Germany but assembled here.

ok, will have to have a closer look at mine now, maybe it has a false plate on, because it has the high vents and is a 67, yet Im sure that it had germany written on the plate, will have to re-check plate now.
