I'm looking at replacing the stock ignition on my 1776 t3 motor. Whats a good upgrade or is stock plus a Bosch blue coil and leads going to be okay for my needs?

Cheers Dan😉

Dan I used the Pertronix 2 with their flamethrower coil realy livens up the motor. Just need to add some 40 IDF's and a meged system to complete.
May even try their second strike module acts like MSD but takes it all the way thru the rev range (MSD stops at 3000 rpm)
Or pobjoy is doing twin spark heads along with all the electronics if your heads need updating this may be an option.

NigeType3 where did you get it and did you fit it up yourself? Lastly how much was it?

Cheers Dan😉

I've found the Pertronics ignition but none is listed for a t3? Two other Q's. If i'm changing to Electronic ignition do i stick with the original dizzy or change to a 009? I want a rev limiter so is a Pertonics what i need or an MSD of some sorts???

Ahhhhhhhhh

Dan it will be listed for the 009 distributor the pig ran heaps better with this setup.
I got it from a local auto electronics place and they installed it for me only because I need heaps of ather stuff done at same time. As your car is in good nic you should be able to nstall yourself.

I only went for this system as the shop had published data showing HP gains on V8 engines using the same system. These gains endend up being similar to the MSD system but much simpler and cheeper. They also recon that when I get my carbies sorted that adding the second strike will offer even more plus a realy good rev limiter that will keep my engine alive.

Hope this helps but I love this system has been on car for over a year now with now issues at all.

Nige it's listed for either stock or 009 but doesn't list for a t3. It shows a Ignitor II that requires a better coil (Flamethrower) and used on only 009 dizzy . Is this the second strike your on about????

Here's the link
http://www2.cip1.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=1600

So by the looks of it i need a 009 dizzy , ignitor II ignition , flamethrower coil with a sepairate rev limiter???

:duh Dan

Dan go here to read about the second strike

http://pertronix.com/

you don't need it strait away but I recon it would be a good idea to get latter.
You will also need a good set of leads to get the most out of it.

The link should take you to the Pertronix main page look under products and then second strike.
I have no idea on price but as I said you don't need it strait away to get your thing humpen along the other stuff will do.

Its only more money!

Sorry Nige

The old Jaycar multi-spark CDI (singing brick) gives 6 sparks (on a 4-stroke 4-cyl) at low RPM and a minimum of 2 (1 negative and 1 positive) sparks from 9000 up to 15000 rpm and 4 sparks in-between.

If Second Strike does dwell control then you don’t need Ignitor II, you can use the cheaper Ignitor. As dwell control is the key difference between them. Dwell control messes with most other spark boxes such as Mallory and MSD (but they work great with the cheaper Ignitor) according to Aircooled.net.

The Ignitor II with the Flamethrower II coil on its own should be as good as most modern cars’ electronic ignition systems. If you have dwell control (and extension) you don’t really need a separate spark box.

As for a rev limiter the crude option is to get the Bosch centrifugal rev limiting rotor (that fits a 009).

I've been reading up and it looks like the Ignitor II and Flamethrower II coil , leads and digital rev limiter are the way to go.

Just need to find a supplier for the rev limiter

Question though , what dizzy shall i go with? Stock or 009?

Pertronix II (for VW) only fits the 009 right?

Or maybe SVDA (from aircooled.net) – it’s like a 009 but with vac advance. But ask them if it fits first.

Speedster-WISD Nats 05 14.4s @ 89 MPH

Jet cruiser-Coogee 22-09-05 900 deg C @ 110,000 rpm

Weaseling out of things is what separates us from the animals....................Except the Weasel.

There is probably little cost difference between a dedicated rev limiter box and a MSD anyways.

009 fits all aircooled vw cases even type 4 (I don’t know about the really early ones though). All the yanks use them in their Webered type 3s.

Dan have only run a 009 on my type 3 I don't think it makes a difference. Its a type one motor under deck.

Also the other good thing about the igniter 2 is that if your warming the car up and it stalls and your not around it has a fail system that won't alow you to burn the electic points out. The std igniter don't.

Your having fun with this hay:P
