Sorry for the ignorance but would someone please tell me what the deal is with registration in Australia. I'm moving to Au in a few months (from Alaska, USA) and would like to replace my 67 crewcab with a ???
I see alot of posts that have soe bit about rego. Is there a difficulty in registering an older VW? What is an Engineers cert.? WHy would you need one? What is a rod worthy cert?
Are there laws regarding emissions?
I know I've got some learning to do. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Depends which state you are moving to.

I live in New South Wales.
Here we have a yearly inspection for road worthiness. It is called a Pink Slip. This checks visually lights, rust, mechanicals etc and does a test with print out on brakes and window tint.
If the car is out of registration or has had a major change (new motor with different engine number for egample) you need a one off Blue Slip. This is like a Pink Slip but a bit more thorough. They check engine, VIN numbers, oil leaks and thorough mechanical(ball joints etc)
An engineers certificate is required when you change from original manufacture. This ranges from putting a 2007 turbo in an oval to different seats in a super beetle.
You may have guessed that not many of us get an engineers cert for seats etc.
When you get an Eng Cert it then classifies your bug as "modified" and restricts the comprehensive insurance you can cover you bug with.
At present with non modofied vehicles there is no problem registering them if they are road worthy.
There are some restriction when it is modified.

As for the other states they are slightly different. Main difference is they dont have a yearly Pink Slip but when you sell the vehicle the new owner needs a Road Worthy Cert - sort of like a blue slip.

Any way - welcome and ask a few more questions

I am moving to NSW (Berry area)
When you go to get the inspection is it the subjective opinion of the inspector as to whats safe? Or are there guide lines with which they go?
Thanks

For example
What do I need if I get a crew cab, lower it and put different wheels on it? (I'm bringing my BRM's)
What about a big motor? (2 litre)
Thanks

when you say crew cab - i assume a bay?? not a split???

"technically" touching the suspension (lowered beam) and say a IDF / cam / etc motor would need an eng cert.
"technically" - i think even the BRM's would.......but if every one took their car with BRM'sn it for an Eng Cert then ........ WOW.... no one would get registered.

IF you are talking a splitty with a Type 4 2L.... then yeah, i think you would need an eng cert. That is a bit TOO much of an increase.

Berry is a nice area.
there is a few clubs down that way

I will drop Dave in it and say to get in touch with Dave Becker. He is a VW head down that way. He is at Bomaderry... not much farther south. Maybe 20 or so kms. He will be able to point you in the right direction
