Australia Day vehicle displays to help tsunami victims
Car and motorcycle enthusiasts are being encouraged to take part in “Wheels for World Vision” displays which will raise funds for tsunami disaster victims.
To be held in Brisbane and the Gold Coast on Australia Day, the displays are being supported by the state’s motoring club, the RACQ.
RACQ spokesman, Albert Budworth, said the displays were expected to attract “anything with wheels,” including cars, bikes, trucks and tractors.
“Brian Darke, of the Gold Coast MG Car Club, and the Ormiston-based Bayside Vehicle Restorers’ Club are staging these displays so that vehicle enthusiasts throughout the region can rally together to help tsunami victims,” he said.
“The RACQ is happy to provide support for the events, which are expected to feature hundreds of vehicles from the old, the rare, the fast, the flashy and the unique.”
Mr Budworth said car and motorcycle clubs throughout south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales were being encouraged to plan vehicle ‘runs’ to the displays at Carrara Stadium on the Gold Coast and the Alexandra Hills Hotel in Brisbane.
“Once vehicles arrive at these destinations – at around 10am – they will be on display to members of the public for the rest of the day,” he said.
Motorists and motorcyclists taking part will pay a $10 fee and members of the public can see the displays at either venue by making a gold coin or banknote donation.
The RACQ recently made a $100,000 donation to the tsunami relief effort.
“The club is more than happy to support these Australia Day displays, which are expected to raise many thousands of dollars for this most worthwhile cause,” Mr Budworth said.
“We are confident motoring and motorcycle enthusiasts will be keen to take part and invite them to contact their local car club or phone co-organiser Brian Darke on 5530 2089.”
