just wondering if in the 60s and 70s if these wheels were ever sold here or if all the original wheels hav been imported etc.
thanks

One man's junk...
I don't remember seeing any mag or special wheels back in the 60s Sam, so i believe they have been imported since then....
The only modification was having the rims widened to fit fatter than normal tyres.... this was once Radial tyres became easy to buy....
Michelins then Pirellis came onto the scene...
185 x 15 or even 185 x 14 inch rims were common....
The cheapest way to get performance out of a beetle was to use 13 or 14 inch rims & tyres.....
Mags only became common during the 70s when most cars had to have mag wheels.... [4 stud]...
cheers

a friends dad had a 1500 back in the day with sprint stars (and pin striping). i wonder where it is now.
there is or was a country buggy in on a property (i think) tassie with a full empi GTV kit on it.... plus empi tuning bits in the engine bay.
there also used to be (early to mid 90's) a POS 60's beetle in newtown syd with real BRM's on it. the way the car was described to me they would not have been imported by the then owner.
all of this says to me some stuff was brought in back in the 60's
They were imported by a shop called The Bug Inn located in Neutral Bay Sydney

and the sales words
fark those original BRM's are very light for a 15" wheel. The flat4 repros are about double the weight - they are cast aluminium instead of magnesium
